The Celtis (Hackberry) Scored Progression Contest

2 weeks and not a single sprout out of a dozen seeds each of three species. Anyone else having germination issues?
I have 4 seeds of reticulata that have sprouted out of 30ish that I planted on the 6th, first one popped up at 9 days. They're under a grow light that keeps it pretty toasty at like 80F 24/7. Don't know if that's helped or not, but might be a difference from your setup.

Mine are outside where they've been getting 80°+ and 90°+ days, with nights dropping into the upper 50s and lower 60s.

I am still waiting too. Hopefully they will germinate 🙏🏻

Sinensis here, so far only 5 out of 35 seeds have sprouted. No stratification, only scarification and planted one month ago. The first sprout was more than two weeks ago and yesterday I noticed the 5th.

Just grab some fresh celtis seedling and join us 😁. I digged up some seeds to see what they look like and they are same as were when I sowed them two months ago 😅😅
@minkes celtis grow like weeds here in South Africa, you’d be hard pressed to not spot a Celtis in almost very garden/sidewalk/crack in a pavement (that’s South African colloquial for sidewalk)

I have three species in seed beds. 7 out of 8 germinated in one, neither of my other 2 have any signs of sprouting.

Since it is too late now for growing from seed for this season, I ordered a small Australis sapling to use as a mother tree for cuttings. But I understand that it is not easy to propagate from cuttings, especially from softwood. Anyone successful in doing that?

I plan on starting softwood cuttings soon. I need to clear room in my propagator

I've had a grand total of 2 out of the 40+ that I planted germinate.

A lot of other germination flops this year too. Just gonna have to see if I can keep these two alive. One got very dry in the hot weather weve had lately so itll probably be a mame, or kindling 😂

Still nothing, so I tried again to dig a little bit in the soil and finaly few of them was cracked and little root starting to emerge. So hope is alive 😅

A little late to the game. I just found this thread. It just so happens that Hackberry trees are all over my Sisters place in Texas and I collected several to work on two weeks ago. If I read the rules right, I can’t use the little seedlings I gathered. I suspect they are in their first year, but I definitely did not propagate them (first picture is one of them). I did collect a tree that is probably 5-10 years old. I chopped it down to 18” and brought it to Florida (second picture). Pretty sure they are all Celtis occidentalis. The older one was dug up 13 days ago, chopped, stuffed in a pot and brought to Florida and it is just back budding everywhere like a super hero tree. I assume as soon as some of these budding branches get long enough, I can use one as a cutting for the contest and go from there. I’m thinking with this thing budding so fast, it should really root cuttings fast. Will I be too late to get in or does “better late than never” work for 20+ year growing contests. 😀

Better late than never! Your softwood cuttings would be acceptable for year 1 entry to contest.
