My saguaro is growing!

I'm so excited! I repotted it a couple of years ago and it hasn't put on new growth since...I was really starting to worry :(

I started this guy from seed 20 years ago when my mother-in-law sent me some seed from their new home in Pheonix. I had it in Illinois for 10 years and now in Missouri for another 10. It looks out of place here...

Apparently the “red and white flag” is fairly common pattern.. but I planted All seeds from “Black Beauty triangular petaled” pods..

Just fascinating seed genetics.. I hope i get some more “non-purples”..

I also cross-pollinated my Hungarian black Pepper and Carolina Reapers.. because the Hungarian Blacks do VERY well here.. aaaaand the Reapers just wanna be in Carolina.... and Carolina, Wisconsin is not.

Real cacti are a very under appreciated addition to a garden. The flowers are incredible, and the shapes can really break up or accent the lines of a traditional garden scape.
I've wanted to cultivate a patch of prickly pear for years but haven't gotten around to it. Beautiful AND edible.

I guess a stray seed got mixed in. Still impressive though.
That’s what I’m saying.. I buy seed PODS..... it’s just the genetics... I think!

🤓

The “cross” pattern is a fairly common variant..

“Red and white” is the most common.. with “frilled” petals.

This one has the “standard petals” with “Red and white cross pattern”..

So far, besides THIS.. i have noted three petal variations WITHIN the “black ones” too...

There are a couple of places I hike here where prickly pear grow wild. They are wild in Illinois too.

I think saguaro typically don't bloom until about 35 years. I'd image mine will be behind being so far from "home" :) First are is typically around 75 years...I'm not likely to see that!

This one grew way faster than wild specimen in the early years...constant access to water will do that ;) It's etoliated and falling behind wild specimen now...lack of enough sunlight will do that :(
