Extended season starting trees indoors

Nice... why double root pouch and in a pot (= tripple pot)
I prefer the inner 1 pt pouch,I leave them on a long time. ...any pots after that were for water conservation.I cannot wait to peel off the fabric next week and look at that trunk!!!

Mikawa’s at 3mnths old from seedling cuttings.

These are starting to bulk up.The leaves are very thick on many of them.As stated before ther is a lower percentage of clump/multi-branch ones.I wonder if this may be a genetic thing with Mikawa.
Anyway they are vigorous and certainly some good starts.Still have another 3 mnths to go yet!!!
Will be pretty huge.
Here are loads of pictures.....10A38454-3C8F-4D2F-8B11-C8EC85A17ADC.jpegFBE50706-7589-4112-89E1-EB133B092C36.jpeg0FBDB8AB-6D4B-40E4-8A19-D4F13B62D595.jpeg9A45EC3C-B4CA-44BB-8A58-F08A597428EC.jpegDDC93413-3A1D-441E-83A6-CFB7B2970DE7.jpegBE0A1BFF-D866-4D41-97F7-462931F2A717.jpegE9359847-CAC0-4AAF-B183-9A05D763CC66.jpegA151E81E-47DC-4D41-8409-B75BA76D5430.jpeg52F34A9E-93A1-4E63-B15F-4BBED83CBF2F.jpegD6B09717-6A4C-489B-8D7C-675CA192AFFC.jpeg

@cmeg1 are you re-using the rootpouches over many seasons? Considering buying some but just saw how your pine roots grew straight through them

While a few grow through, most stay in and prune properly. In my experiance,if you reuse them roots grow through big time unless you get heavier weaves. My fav 1 pt size are only in 12-15mnth grade.
This batch of pines I did use lots of re-used pots that were a couple mnths old I believe.I washed in the machine and they were wuite soft, but still got the job done.....new ones are best all the way.

MIKAWA’s and also the new potting technique.

Mikawa are starting to get big.Spread out what I could i to two tents and put the rest in the fridge at 35-40 degrees to see if they will store a couple mnths. Will try putting freshly rooted cuttings in there too.
Also am testing a technique for more cuttings per square foot in the tents after rooting and to grow on a couple mnths.
The trays are lined with Rootpouch fabric and each tray in about 2’x1’ and has 162 slots to put a cutting. These should be ok to get to a sellable size and then up-pot when rootball is dense in a couple mnths. Will in est in small pots to sell these after they sit outside a few weeks after transplanting.
Anyways a ton of cuttings now with these trays.A real space saver!!!

great success rate!!!

These will be nice.
Also before sales in Spring ,I may wait till’ last week of April or early May for the big Mikawa’s to be up-potted and set outside. This works wonders for getting the candles moving.I plan to do that all season with all I sell so they have some extra weight before sales and are acclimated to outdoors.
They always explode into growth when put outside.

Loads of cuttings

I have about 300 of these and no room as of yet.
I am going to conduct a cool storage experiment and store them right into a refridgerator at a constant 36f-40f & 78%-92% relative humidity.

They will perish if freeze....
I read fresh cuts can be stored quite a while in a Forestry Service article.
We will see.

seed sewing: Chaenomeles japonica/korean hornbeam(coreana).

I could not resist planting these although space is quite limited.
The chaenomeles will be a fun experiment to see what variability I get.....maybe a dwarf chojubai type?
The korean hornbeam are 10 year old seeds...Sheffields stated I would get some germination.

I pre soaked both lots in fulvic acid/kelp before the stratification measures & also gave a 1 hr soak just before planting this morning.
The Chaenomeles are cracking open!!!

These are destined for aeroponic seedling air-layer experiments that I had success with last season as seen in the last two pictures with Coreana Hornbeam.

Wow !! thats impressive.
What is the media (mix) do you use for sowing Seeds and after seedling what is the media(mix) do you use for seedling cuttings?

Thanks

Sewing seed recently went 50/50 large grade vermiculite/grade 2 perlite.....no dust from either.

last crop of cuttings used 1/3. Vermiculite, but am liking a general 50/50 mix for everything. It is a life saver when they get big and start drinking lots of water.

For cutting flats a 50/50 mix will be fine, but in the top 1” layer add 50% shredded orchid spahgnum.

OR FOLLOW THE COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS IN POST# 535

When do roots become thinn like on the left and when thick like on the righthand picture?

Thanks, yes thats perfect. I have read and noted #535

some more questions I have

1. How much water to use for: 1/16tsp fulvic acid powder:::::1/32tsp kelp powder. + 1/64tsp yucca powder surfactant
2. Any link to this fertilizer and how much water to use for this and also how often at pre-cut stage? ( 1:1 nitrogen to potassium ratio fertilizer at about .4 EC)
3. Can I mix Fulvic, Kelp, Yucca with the 1:1 nitrogen to potassium ratio fertilizer or it has to be separate, if it separate then shall I give fertilizer after fulvic/kelp/yucca or before?

Sorry I am a novice at this and trying to follow. Thanks for your patience

Cheers

1gallon water for the 5:2 fulvic kelp...only once a week on leaves or will burn...if drenching roots rinse the leaves....the exception is the first few weeks of pine seedling cuttings as they are more resistant to burning, but eventually will.

Clonex is a good 1:1 ratio....can mix the bio stimulants with it(fulvic, humic, kelp).
Clonex will eventually get deficiencies when getting big and will need anproper fertilizer.I prefer two part hydro ferts.
Check this!!!
Post #423.....my complete rundown.....only major change since has been a doubling of calmag in full on grow stage.

Also I have good results with .2 ec mother fert/clonex/1:1 ratio.

All these articles in the link are good.
Bio stimulants,seedlings,high brix,potassium,calcium,humic and fulvic,,amino acids
Pay attention to ph also!!!!!
Good place to start in the articles
