Eisei-en Japanese Maple

This past weekend I visited Bjorn Bjorholm’s garden Eisei-en. It was also my first time meeting Bjorn. He is a very nice guy and down to earth. It was an incredible experience to see the world class trees in his garden. The trees look incredible in pictures and videos, but they look even better in person! I highly recommend anyone serious about bonsai to try to make a visit to his garden.

While visiting Eisei-en, I purchased this Japanese maple from Bjorn. This tree was created from three seedlings that sprouted together underneath a garden maple at Bjorn’s parents house about 10 years ago, and has been in training as a bonsai since.

It has a nice future as an elegant triple trunk maple, and I look forward to continuing the development and refinement over the coming years

I haven’t measured the height yet, but it is tall. I would guess 3ft plus or minus a few inches. It barely fit in the back of my wife’s mid sized suv. I thought I was going to have to chop a a few inches off the tallest trunk lol.

Yup, it’s evident when you visit his garden not every tree is an import or expensive Yamadori. He has very obtainable and every day material that he is developing with proper techniques that will in the future be world class bonsai.

I really like Harry Harrington's books for that kind of material. I.e. stick to show tree.

Thank you, I will update the thread later in the year with pictures of fall color and winter silhouette.
Branches and still being developed and there are some straight sections so those may be pruned this winter as well.

I was debating getting something from him when we visit up there in a few weeks, but never been before so wasn't sure what to expect and if there'd be anything in my price range.

He has material at all price levels. Some younger material that is really good he may not sell yet though. He had some really great clump Japanese maples in training that he said he wanted to hang on to a little bit longer to develop before selling.

I wish he would list more trees for sale online, there's always barely any selections there for the rest of us that cant make the trip.

He mentioned recently in a live Q&A that he has had problems with FedEx and UPS damaging shipments for trees and pots and going forward will probably not be listing trees or pots for sale on his website

not quite sure yet, but probably not. The very top 3 inches or so of the tallest trunk is rather straight so that will probably be cut back for movement and taper but I will be able to evaluate more in the winter once the leaves drop

Definitely not leggy but thread grafting is always a possibility.
