dawn redwood--where to go?

I wonder if without paste....
It would have less of a good environment to build so much tissue?

Maybe avoiding watering the trunk too?
So it's not so moist....huhu....moist.

As a data point. I use the cut paste that is like soft rubber. My water is set up so it never hits the trunk other than at the very base possibly. I do have it set to water them twice a day. Only thing that seems to hurt these trees is drying out.

Problems drying out? What?!

Yeah, I drench this specific tree with water 4 times per day in the summer here in OKC.

Earlier this year I was only watering twice, before work and after, and all the new growth went crispy, in a single day in late May, just like that. It's always windy here, which exacerbates and accelerates desiccation.

It's since recovered and happy once again.

They do love H2O and humidity.

IMG_20161014_110710.jpg just an update so this tree will be 2 1/2 this fall. Even with aggressive root work they grow fast. The scaring is allot less with the early low branch removal.
