Colorado’s Literati Piñon Pine

Nice start all the way around. Needs a 'literati' style pot.

Noice! Pinch that middle candle in favor of 2 ✌🏻!

Thanks for the reminder! 😂 I need to do that all over the tree.

Once the candles extend more I am also going to cut all the candles to about the same length to try to balance the energy across the whole tree. Although it’s already pretty well balanced as it is.

I am very happy with this tree this spring. It is showing great strength and relatively balanced energy all over the tree.

That being said, I am continuing to work on more balanced energy distribution. Today I pinched the candles for the second time this spring. When I say pinch, I mean that I use pruning shears to cut the candles to the desired length. Most of the tree has multiple candles, with one much stronger than the other one or two, such as this:

So I cut the stronger candle to match the strength of the other one, like this:

I also removed a candle entirely where there were 3, but that was only in a few spots. It was mostly just 2 candles. The apex is getting nice and strong, lots of vigorous candles!

Maybe eventually I will prune/pinch all the candles to a certain length. I haven’t fully figured out piñon yet. I want to see if cutting the candles makes the needles longer.

In any event, having fun with this one learning about the species and how to handle it!
