Chinese Juniper - going to need a plan soon!

(I have pretty much decided to air layer off the end of the dead straight San Jose branch and jin the stub, it's as thick as my wrist so would made a cool stocky Shohin. As for the rest of the 1-2" thick branches.....have to see how the grafting goes first really. I might graft to the base of that straight branch too before layering it, but that's pretty low on a juniper for a primary branch so I'm in two minds about it.)

The big one taking up too much space, and the tray of cuttings from it, six of which are Itoigawa grafted. :)683D9B03-59DC-4D0C-9844-99AAAF497219.jpegABC9469E-2968-4DB2-8D72-006CD081ACE1.jpegB399A148-A876-4730-BD21-3BEA682A87ED.jpeg29B3AA71-74D9-478D-8F6C-C141BECB8EEC.jpeg

That’s the plan as I said...but I have to grow more Itoigawa mass/bulk to use as scions first hence the smaller ones. I only have one main Itoigawa source which is a small shohin so I can’t keep chopping more bits off it to use!

I bought the shohin partly with the aim to get material from cuttings but several batches failed, then three air layers failed as well, odd that grafting turned out the most reliable/easiest method in the end!

The grafts didn’t go as well as planned, 2 or 3 are alive still.

I think that in effect the understock isn’t vigorous enough, and it’s due a repot to try to get the dregs of field soil out of the core. So into a grow box in coarse mix it goes!

There was a build up of moss on the flakey bark, plus a lot of shari and live veins so I used a hose to scrub the trunk, worked surprisingly well! I was going to start the air layer on the long straight branch but seeing the deadwood and veins I’m not 100% sure...the wood is starting to rot so maybe I’ll carve/hollow and bend and use that branch after all.

For now the plan is just to speed it up and graft it with more Itoigawa.

I think grafting will work best once the tree is well established and strong. Recently repotted might not be the best basis for grafting?

That’s what I meant by speed it up - speed up the under-stock in effect to improve grafting results

Looking for deadwood: the upper part of the big shari is clear to see, the lower bark is still alive although weak, I left it in place even though it’s rotten at ground level.
