Arctic blast... already?

well Nws gets more global warming research $$$$ so of course they are going to predict on the warm side. Follow the money. (Until it is clear you should not)
This is utterly non-sensical yet said with such confidence. I suppose Darwin was right when he noted that ignorance more often begets confidence than does knowledge 🤷‍♂️

?! How nasty to insult when you yourself don't know when the end of the current ice age will be. We know it will get a lot colder before it melts.
same to you saildesign. rude to upvote an insult.

@bonsaichile Best to ignore her. Just someone trying to derail a thread.

Somewhat back on topic, in the PNW this year it's been the opposite. In the Seattle suburbs we've had a few (2?) nights that got down to 30F briefly), but otherwise we've been quite a bit above freezing. No snow at the ski resorts. We're about a month behind where we'd be in a normal year. It's been great for finishing up Fall bonsai work. But I can't help worry it's just all saving up for a massive deep freeze in January.

Not "upvoting an insult", merely agreeing that your comment was insulting to scientists in general, and doubly so to NWS folks who are merely trying to save your planet.

I was 3 F when I walked the pup this AM... he didn't care 🤷‍♂️ 🦌

that is a big nope for me. I have found that as I get older, the cold bothers me more, the heat less. It will down to 20 tonight, close to 70 by midweek. I moved most of my trees off the benches and onto the ground. I'll put them back up Tuesday afternoon. The long range forecast is highs in the 50s and 60s, lows in the 30s and 40s. Perfect winter weather for this old guy

I feel you... my surgically repaired wrist hasn't stopped aching for weeks... but a dog's gotta go, and there ain't no way I'm gonna pad train a soon to be 80 pounder... his 💩 is already bigger than mine🤷‍♂️

Southwest disease is t limited to extremely cold areas. In fact it’s pretty common in more temperate areas where warms ups above freezing are followed by sharp drops into 20s or below.

Looks the midwest might experience something like that toward the end of this week. We will hit 80 later this week... the warm air will move up North to thaw out the snow in the last few days... lucky for us we won't see the extreme cold after this warm spell but the midwest will.

I bought ultasonic sound generators, switching in frequency in a range that mice hear. They are claimed to keep mice away in spaces of certain size (bought a small one just for my workspace where I put things in case of unexpected frosts). Might be worth checking for.
I use Bonide Molemax abd haven’t had any mouse or vole damage at all even though my yard and woodlot is full of them. It is basically fine particle clay saturated with castor oil which most rodents apparently hate. I just group my trees together and sprinkle a liberal amount all around and over them and that’s all it takes.

27F was the lowest I saw last night. About to have one more night into the 20s and then the forecast shows 60s and 70s the rest of the month for highs

I don’t even know what’s going on anymore…

Business idea - Since you are a Vet. you probably know. Has there been a treadmill for the four-legged friends? We clocked in at 34 this morning... too cold. :-)
There are dog treadmills and I've seen people train them to use human treadmills but it doesnt help with their need to use the bathroom

Lightly heated shed (blue) vs unheated greenhouse (orange)
Bonsai are in the shed. The greenhouse is empty for the season. The spike in shed temperatures is from when I replaced the battery. Really happy with not having to bring my sensitive plants into the basement anymore.

My dog still needed to go out and play fetch when it was 4°F
