Arakawa Japanese Maple

so do arakawa do better in full sun or part shade? Getting ready to airlayer some branches on mine, I’m assuming once the leaves are fully out is a good time to start.

I’d recommend reading this thread from the start. It is full of great information about the cultivar and techniques in general, and that topic is addressed at least twice :)

i spent this morning reading through it and taking notes about approach grafts, air layering, root grafts, back budding, sun tolerance, life span, apex maintenance and more ?

Indeed they do well under direct sun but they also can thrive under more shaded conditions. I am in the Northeast. As you travel down south summers of course get more intense. I would suggest where you are to give it some shade in the summer months. Ensure they are always well watered in summer. It will reward you with beautiful orange to scarlet red autumn colors.

As their buds begin to swell you can acclimate your tree to direct sun by placing it right away in a sunny spot.

That fall color kills me every time I open this thread. Such a wild and wonderful tree.

Spring is here! Will let it flush out and cut back around June. The tallest apex is coming in strong. I'd like to get it more dense and compact but need to proceed with care so as not to weaken it. The display table is too dark and a bit small.

Really like this tree Mach5.
I read through this whole thread but I need to study it a bit slower.
It was cool to see your vision of the small trunks coming out of the nebari come around.
About halfway through I started seeing it.
Well done.
