Arakawa Japanese Maple

View attachment 165565 Thanks for for all the info. I plan on doing some air layers on this arakawa . I have some branches in mind some are pointing down any suggestions on air layering them?

I my experience arakawa has been easy to air layer. I use regular sphagnum moss with a bit of root hormone. Sometimes I do not even use it with same results. I use a clear plastic wrap and off you go. Make sure that the cut is very clean and wide enough to avoid bridging. In 6 to 8 weeks you should be able to separate your layers. I have tried making them in early in spring before bud brake all the way to early summer with similar results. Very easy. Good luck!

Great fall color! Tree is looking terrific.

Thanks Chris! I am preparing for another approach graft at the top and have currently a root graft in progress at the front of the tree. I should be able to remove it by next May or so.

Thank you for posting these photos. I have a weakness for JM, and it is all I can do to keep them alive down here. Those photos of fall color remind me of my childhood in the MidWest :)

Arakawa has it all... Colour, bark, easy to root, resistant. Nice

Yes so true! The only piece of information (or rather misinformation) that's been going around is the fact that they are not long lived. There is a well known YouTuber that trained in Japan saying arakawa only lives to 25 years of age. Simply and clearly not true. Walter has one estimated at 80 years old and another from Bill at 40 to 50. Sure there are others at least as old. It is unfortunate that folks like him spread this type of information. I have sent him a couple of emails with no response.

BNut BTW there is no way to go back and edit titles of threads correct? This one just doesn't make much sense anymore. :(

Autumn progression as the tree shuts down until next year. In the spring it will be wired again and pruned where necessary. It will also be repotted into a blue-green rectangular Koyo pot. The small third trunk was just cut back. In the spring it will be cut even shorter and start to develop a ramified structure to fit with the rest of the design. Difficult to see in the photos, but it has a root graft in progress on the front of the tree.

Those are stunning! It's almost enough to make me move from Vegas (really would not take much)!

Yes fantastic, another beauty from you , I love the Arakawa bark on these , man it makes me look old and rugged !

There's not much I can say that will do justice as to how nice this tree looks, good work to both you and the previous owner. A good partnership to produce wonderful results.
