any photos? its always a pleasure to see good trees.
From his instagram @reelbonsai - A mountain hemlock he collected 17 years ago. Great example of the material available out here. The local hemlocks are really stunning.

No, Ryan is not the only one with the contacts. Anyone can purchase trees from Randy Knight, Todd Schlafer, Backcountry Boys and others. Although I think Ryan (and Bjorn) picks over the best material….as it should be! I’m glad that the most advanced material is under the care of the most advanced practitioner(s).

The rumor that I heard (from someone who seems to know everyone) is that Ryan has the right of first refusal to at least Randy Knight and a few other top-notch collectors, and that he buys up a lot of the best stock that Randy doesn't keep for himself

I'd wager anyone in the PNW with a vehicle that can handle forest service roads, good physical condition for some hiking and the time/means to work through the tricks of collection can acquire material that would sell online for over a thousand dollars after a few years of care.
Also important to do it legally and from allowed zones. I forget who this happened to, but a local bonsai person collected a number of trees but got pulled over by the forestry rangers. They didn’t have a permit or I’m not sure what the legality was (there are also limits for certain heights) and they confiscated a dozen collected yamadori. People who collect share this story as a precaution so no one else will ever experience this kind of heartbreak. Do the due diligence for collecting, it is a pretty common thing to do (people harvest xmas trees), all the legal info is out there, get the right permits (including forest passes for your vehicle) and have fun.

Many of them have been trained by him for less than 5 years. many arent finished trees.
Sure not all, but some. It’s hard to find trees in that quality for sale in the US. Maybe Facebook auctions you can find some, but you don’t know who the seller is which goes into the health of the tree.
Last year and the year before, etc, there were a lot of trees that I gaffed off. But some were really beautiful, trained, specimen that you literally couldn’t find anywhere else. Unless you buy or collect the raw and create it yourself(which I prefer).
To each is own.

Does Mirai ship these trees? Serious question.
I do know they do a bonsai ‘wagon’ to Nationals, thinking they probably drop off trees on the way. They do some very nice packaging though, I’m sure the trees get to their destination in superb shape. (Remember that one poor tree shipped from the Bonsai Museum last year.. 😬?)

Im assuming you’re talking about my tree… 🤣

I always like seeing what’s for sale, even though I’ll probably never buy one. I’m not a fan of having to pull the trigger on something in a split second just to get it. The trees in my price range are few and go quick. I’m not at the point, or skill level, that I’m going to spend thousands of dollars..yet..at some point ..possibly.

How is it doing?? 😅
Its doing great. It bounced back after its traumatic experience. It pushed good growth this spring and I actually took it to Bjorn’s nursery in the beginning of May. I am starting his intensive course in December and he will be maintaining my tree at his place during my time in the intensive program.

In their email on the sale they include a link to their "Covered Wagon" shipping truck. It runs from the PNW to east coast (New York, is the final destination, I think) with stops along the way.

Uh, this is true of most every bonsai pot I've ever bought and sold. If you expect to get your retail value out of any pot, you're nutz. Won't happen mostly.
I think the Tokoname ones hold their prices better right?

Depends on the kiln, the maker at the kiln, whether the pot was constructed personally by a noted potter, etc. There is an entire market for higher end Japanese bonsai pots, many from the Tokoname kilns (which make, or have made) a wide range of quality, from mold-made, mass produced, to one-off handmade pots from artist/potters.

FWIW, some of the most valuable pots are from China, dating back over 100 years. The Japanese imported "kowatari" and "nakawatari" pots.

Mirai posted a reel on IG with some of the trees that will be in the sale.
I screenshotted this Linden, it looks like one of the Lindens he did a nursery haul stream on, does anyone remember the stream? I was wondering how those turned out.
Anyway, this is by no means a finished tree and one could probably find something like it it at a tree nursery. also, im pretty sure one could style a tree like this with a little practice.
also, in my humble opinion its still pretty raw.

Agreed and I’m willing to bet that it will sell for no less than $3000
