All aboard the Mugo train!

^^^I usually catch before it gets bad. You are most certainly correct.
On my garden citrus, because you can’t see them right away, I have had to take secondaries off.

I was hoping to find a moth fan, tucker or not, lotion, basket, doesn't matter.

Found me a bitchinly tapered trunk with not terrible branches yesterday.

Went out for Fertilizer, a brush, a washer, and maybe a paint mixer for clay, only came home with this! Lol! No Alaska fish anywhere! TF.

I don’t have a Mugo yet but I have found some very cheap ones online, so I might pick one up next spring when I get my Sangokaku. Won’t grab one yet as I don’t want my Acer shipping this time of year.

Any specific type of Mugo recommendations?

The one with a fat trunk and good rootage!

Seriously, If a good one isn't around, you may just want to get anything to learn on, before buying a good mountain one some day.

I had no idea what I was doing this spring when I picked it up. I think I actually gouged into that first knuckle to try and tame the inverse taper😑... Its ugly but its mine, choo choo!20201001_170839.jpg

You have to think outside the box with Mugos, they don't always lend themselves to the standard styles happily. I have had people ask me where I get single trunked Mugos and I tell them as I am telling you, I develop the single trunk from the many the nursery gave me.

Neither one----because we cannot see the trunk or any part of the nebari, and those are the critical elements in answering your question.

Do you know what kind of mugo this is? Is there a list somewhere of all the different varieties? I'm aware of the mops, mughus, pimilio, uncinata, swiss mountain.

I love pines for bonsai but have been a little obsessed with mugos. The mops is my favorite variety. I'll post a photo of my favorite tree that I purchased this summer. Unfortunately, I think it is dead and I really want to recreate the same style.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum. I bought this mugo mops over the summer and subsequently killed it when I didn't realize that it was getting too much sun/heat. I didn't notice the major decline until I came home from working out of town for a week. My roommate was watering my trees while I was gone and didn't know that it was dying. Someone recently told me not to get too attached to your bonsai trees but it's too late. This was by far my favorite bonsai!

I really want to recreate this same style. What advice would you guys have for someone wanting to develop a mugo like this? I'm guessing my only hope is to grow one from a seedling or cutting? Have any of you had any success with air layering from a mugo?

Here are a couple other angles. It’s hard to see how cool this trunk is in two dimensional photos.

I'm really liking this thread. I started reading at the beginning and am almost 1/3 of the way through. I am taking notes and trying to learn as much as I can about mugos. I currently have 5 mugos and am waiting on two new ones to get shipped to me. I'm looking forward to learning more from you all.

The first two pictures are of one that is very vigorous. I pruned some of the branches in mid summer to let light in. I need to figure out what direction to go with it as the trunk and branch structure is kind of crazy at the moment.

The third picture us another one I'm working on that has a great trunk, I just need to figure out what to do with all of the branching going up the tree. Any advice you have is welcomed!

just need to figure out what to do with all of the branching going up the tree.

They all fork. I would cut each one's stronger tine off to promote new buds at the trunk junction. Grow one of those new buds to a shapeable branch, them remove the entirety of those large branches in favor of smaller more bendable ones.

Repot first next summer maybe attempt one high one then, but wait for vigour to return to do the rest.

Tell you something we can't tell Trump....
Nice Grabs!
