About Princess Persimmon

Note the quantity of thick roots removed.

Nice work!

Did you keep any of these roots for root cuttings? This is one of the primary method for propagating these persimmons in Japan.

When mine arrived from Japan, i potted then up without taking root cuttings due to general

i want one of these trees eventually, for eating the fruit and bonsai.

it makes good moonshine i saw on tv too

I think you likely saw Diospryos kaki or virginiana

These are Diospyros rhombifolia. I've tried them at different stages of ripeness, and they are not good to eat.

I think somebody posted this somewhere here recently, but I forgot where and had to find it in my YouTube history:

This species intrigues me…. After hearing about how difficult they can be I sorta backed away but I’m keeping my eyes peeled…. I feel like this one might be an example of where I should wait til I’m more firm in my skills.

maybe if I see something at a stage to be ground grown I’ll throw it in my growing area. I’d be curious to hear of folks think I’m over-blowing the difficulty…. After splurging on an ume last year I’m pretty sure I’m about as far over my skis as one can get with new species though!
I want to say they are not hard to grow but definitely hard to get fruit and keep the fruits until they ripe. My 5 from EGW are all growing well. One flowered last year and 4 flowered this year. Have not been able to get them to fruit yet…

Nice Serg. Once again, mine got about a far as yours are now, and dropped off. I need to figure these things out...
Any updates? Mine have lots of flowers this year but I am not sure if I am going to get any fruits…

Is the one you got from EGW Rhombifolia or Cathayensis? They had been sending Cathayensis out by mistake, which is still a nice plant to have. We can ID if you post a pic.

How long have you had the EGW before they flowered?

1 of them flowered the year after I got them. Mine are all evergreen and kept leaves on for 2 winters in north GA.
The one I got from Julian Adam has much bigger leaves and is deciduous.

Cool, definitely Cathayensis there. I'm interested because this is the first time someone mentioned they have a flowering one state-side. Congrats

Thank you! I was happily surprised too last year when I saw the flowers because Brent said the might not flower for another 3-4 years at least. This year 3 of the 5 flowered profusely which is encouraging.

Sounds like unsexed seedlings. Are you sure they are female plants? You have close up of flowers?

Oh no I don’t have all female plants. I think the ones that flowered are mostly male. I will take close up pics tonight

For those of you who have had princess persimmon seeds, do these look like them?

I now have 2 fruiting trees. 1 big leaf deciduous from Julian and 1 small leaf evergreen from Brent.
