2021 National Bonsai Exhibition - Sept 11-12

Because of the costs and difficulty in transportation associate with the size of the US, I think there is certainly room for 3 professional level, juried shows, whether you want to call them national or regional. As you note, the challenge will be finding willing and able organizers. We have one in the east. Sounds like there's a possibility for one in the west. Anyone in Chicago want to step up?

Yep. One problem if we wind up with the equivalent of 2 or 3 national shows is, those of us in the east will probably not see any (or as many) west coast trees and those in the west won't see as many eastern trees. It would no longer make as much sense for someone in California to ship a tree out to Rochester (and vice-versa) when they'll have a similar show in their backyard the next year. Maybe ultimately there is a single National Show that rotates through the regions every year or two.

A major problem with any show located in California is bringing in trees from out of the State of California. I have never tried to do so, but I know that when trees leave California to go to out of state shows, they have to be registered so that they can re-enter the state after the show.

I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it IS a bother, and it will likely limit any show in California to have mostly California trees.

Keep it on the down low, but in part 4 he films a lot of the trees in detail... nothing to see here folks 🙈🙉🙊
Yep there is a really nice look at my tree in there, and the way he shot it with a good look up into the canopy was really wonderful. Shows the tree off perfectly.

West coast Nationals? Or some central city? I have to admit it was very inconvenient flying into Rochester
Jonas talked about this at a recent Zoom meeting he did for a club out of Palo Alto. It sounds like it’s going to be an awesome event. Can’t wait until November 2022.

The California law should be interesting. Just be sure to leave your agricultural grade lime sulfur and pistolas at home. 😀

Yeah, that's a good point

That is so cool! Yeah, she told me some stories, I'm so glad to have her name. I should really have had a notebook with me. What a nice woman. I can't wait to find the opportunity to match it with a tree! I have to admit I was a bit overwhelmed so I probably didn't do enough socializing. Well, there's always next time...
It’s great to hang around people who have been into bonsai for a long time. Kora is in her 80s, and she drove from Oregon to Rochester. I wound’t be able to do that. She has several Gyozan pots on her table, would be a good buy for the right people. Gyozan does not make those classic style pots anymore. Anything sold on Ebay would be over $1000.

Maybe the western "National" wouldn't be in California - maybe Portland or somewhere else up that way would be more user friendly. If it ever comes to that.

A national show needs to be in the middle of the country near a major airport so that one can either conveniently fly to it (Rochester is very difficult to get to from some parts of the US) or drive to it from all parts of the country. One reason it is so easy for Japan to have a national show is that the country is so small and you can always take a smaller-sized tree to the event on a bullet train!

Aside from the Covid concerns (I was shocked to see photos of how many unmasked people were sitting next to each other in the talks), the main reason I didn't attempt to go to Rochester is that it would have taken a day of travel with several flights and long layovers to get there.

Wow wow. I had no idea. I was drawn to that table - I had kind of blown my budget entirely by then, but that pot called to me. Only pot I bought there, and she gave me a great deal on it too. What a cool lady, I hope I'm doing cross country road trips at 80!

For those of you on FB, don't know if you saw the post from Mirai. Ryan and company posted a three dimensional, interactive photo map of their entire vendor display area at the show. You can walk through it (by clicking like on Google Maps), view shelves and even measure individual pots! it's pretty groundbreaking.

Thanks for sharing Rockm, that was pretty cool.

Regardless of what people think of Mirai, I really respect them for always pushing the envelope on ways to market themselves and bonsai as a whole.

Now if they could do a whole 3D walk through of an entire bonsai show I would be willing to toss $10-20 to view it for a day. 👍

Bill has updated his blog with an entry about the National Show. It looks like it may be a work in progress as the link to purchase the 2021 album still doesn't work, and there looks like there is supposed to be a 3-d tour that isn't loading for me at least.

Valavanis Blog Entry on 2021 National Show

Edit to add - this appears to be a working link to purchase the 2021 album:

I'm sure Bill gave him permission to make that video.

For those who were asking - there is now a 3-d tour of the exhibition available. I'm going to try posting the link to see if it works. Worked on my computer.
