2018: the three year bonsai time capsule

So in 4 days would that not be the 3yr mark? SMDH....
Or you could read post #68:
Alright, closing the vault. Let's bury it by refraining from posting or updating trees using this thread until 9/1/2018.

Good LORD willing, some of us will be around to crack it open in 3 years and start the updates, simply with the 2015 photo and the 2018 photo.

yet you all couldn't resist to reply, lol

looking forward to seeing the updates

This is another of mine, My third and final entry.. A field Elm. It needs some time to develop a canopy, ramification and branch thickness..

This first shot was taken at night, On my balcony

It in fact has the potential to be a top tree.

How bizarre, i ticked this entry off as being void because these images weren't showing, with the changes to photobucket. then for some reason i thought the comp was to be re opened in aug, i assumed the comp was scrapped when there was no activity, so on aug 7 i posted some updated images on my thread, i realise my entry will be void now...fair enough, but ill update it anyway...

LETS GO CHAMP!!!!

We're at about 41 trees so far. Good stuff, any others?

We'll "seal" the vault on Tuesday 9/1/15 and open it on 9/1/18, loading the 2015 and a 2018 photo in the same post so it's cleaner and easy to toggle back & forth. Please post no updates on this thread meanwhile, elsewhere is obviously your prerogative. It will be good to skip over some time to see results after 3 years.
9/1/2018 is coming soon...get your trees cleaned up, and go find your “before” photo from earlier in this thread. I’ll post my vision for updating in the next few days, and we’ll see who can and can’t follow directions?. I want to be consistent and somewhat organized about posting updates so it makes sense when people are reading them so stand by...

Ok, so we made it. 3 years is a long time in many ways. My oldest is now driving her own car on her way home from a football game with good friends. I’ve changed careers and industries. Some of my trees have changed more than others.

Here is how I would like to open the time capsule. Please read this, it’s a test to see how well you can follow directions. More importantly, I want this to serve as a way for others to see what 3 years can mean for a Bonsai, under different climates, care, and across many different species.

1. Quote the text from your original entry.
2. Discuss how you deviated from or followed your plan.
3. Post only the before from 2015, and current from 2018. IMPORTANT: Insert photos into the post as thumbnails.
4. Don’t clutter the post with photos of the work in the years, just the before and after for now.

Thumbnail format makes it easy to flip back and forth to see changes.

I’ll follow this post with the format I’d like us to follow consistently. Thanks for sharing.

Here's #1: air-layered arakawa maple, sweet little twin-trunk with some good movement.

I'm gonna thread graft some primary branches down lower and compact the design. In 2018, I expect to have new branches formed, with a little movement and working on developing new apices.
I did thread graft the branches, which both took; new primary branches on each trunk, and a new leader, that isn’t thickening up too well. Neither apex is all that far along, and this tree is really a slow grower. It is much more compact, however, and that’s a trick with this cultivar.

The big change was the front, deciding the movement was better, I ended up turning the tree 180 degrees. Of the 4 trees I put in the time capsule, this one is probably the least-improved, and definitely needs a couple more time capsules before it is ready to show.

If this is least developed I look forward to seeing your others. There sure is a worthy difference between before and after. Though, not sure if I agree about the movement, it looks more static now then before to me. I guess this may change when the apex’s will develop more

azalea, next year i will remove the bottom right branch and devolop a twin trunk, will style so most of the foliage will go to right side, left side branches keep close to the trunk and point downwards.
3 years is likely not enough though.. want to get the trunk to about 2,3 times what it is now. no need to be very thick but now its much to slim

I only had this 1 entry, i do have several more projects I could enter now.
Anywayz, I think it’s mostly in line with what I had in mind. I do have problems keeping this tree healthy, constant struggle with bugs and fungus, thought it was a goner actually earlier this year but alas it’s still here.
I was lucky getting some sprouts at the base so I didn’t use the lower branch as layer for the twin trunk design I had in mind. Looking at the before, the trunk did develop more then I thought it had. Right now it looks top heavy but that’s because the lower branches are not developed enough. I pruned quite a lot earlier this year. Going forward from here it will be developing the twin trunk and keeping the rest in check, all in all I’m kinda satisfied especially because it’s still alive.
