Just remember to always view the tree 3-5 years down the road, instead of next year. It may well grow into that silhouette with much grace.

Well said. They can definitely thicken in a pot. I've had branches get away from me and thicken too much.

So when trying to keep a branch from thickening too much is process to pinch or just don’t allow shoots to extend?

Just don't allow shoots to extend too much. It's not going to be like an elm, where you blink and it's thick as your arm, but if you let it go all summer, it can thicken more than you'd expect.
