Hi All, so about 2 years ago I transplanted a very large yew that had been growing as a hedge at a house for 70 years. Since I was limited on time I built a rudimentary box just to get it into something. The box is 36 inches x 31 inches and the trunk is about 14 inches across. It's so big it took two of us to handle and maneuver it into the box. Over the past two years it has really taken off in the pot, lots of new growth. My only dilemma is that I can't really work on it because I can't move it. So my goal is to be able to at least maneuver it so that I can begin working on the design, in doing that I have build a new box that's 32 x 28 inches to transplant it into. My question is how much of the original soil and/or root ball can/should I remove in its first repotting since the initial transplant. Also, would it be ok to prune it when I repot? I have about 5 years of experience in bonsai, but I've just never worked on anything this big. Also, I have several other yews, but I read somewhere online that large old yews don't do as well with root pruning/transplanting which has made me a little more concerned with pruning/repotting than usual. Lastly, I was planning on repotting around March, but if someone with more experience says otherwise I'd definitely reconsider. I'll attach some photos for reference, thanks for any and all information. (Note: The growth is the difference from the time I acquired it to this past fall.) (Note: we didn't trim much from the root ball in the photos of us transplanting it.)
