Hey everyone. Working on my first Yew at the moment. I have it growing in the ground after a trunk chop that removed probably 8 feet of upward growth from 3 large diameter trunks. It's had some die back but for the most part is very healthy and pushing lots of new growth. No clue where to go with the styling here, pictures attached!

I'm also not sure which Yew it is. Based on its original height I believe its a Hicks Yew, Taxus x media ‘Hicksii’.

Any styling suggestions or pictures are appreciated to get the juices flowing.

Tony Tickle and Harry Harrington both have lots of yew specimen for design inspiration. They have both been influential on me. Best of luck with this one!

I would not make any design choices at this point. You need to lift it and get it to grow in pot, which can in many cases take 3+ years. During this time parts can die-back more. So do that first -come spring-, get it established, and then consider what to keep and what not.

I agree here, I'll get it out in the spring and pot it up, but I will probably prune it a touch in the fall once the growth has hardened off to get some of the interior and vertical branches out of the way. I've done this before ;)

The motivation behind the post was to find good Yew images and inspiration, I couldn't find much on my own.

Speaking of which, I quite like these. This will be a very fun project for years to come. Maybe there's some big bending I can do to it once I have it out? I'm going to draw up some designs and post later.
