I have this large hedge of Rosemary but I am planning on removing. I figure I might as well try to collect as many as possible for bonsai use. What time of year is best for collecting Rosemary? And does anyone have tips and advice for aftercare for collection? 1000012409.jpg

Calling @ABCarve - the only person I know with a nice rosemary.

Not sure how well these collect - if you read his rosemary thread, they really don't like their roots messed with.

There is also some info in the video from Harry H. on the last page.

Even though your “winters” are mild, I would wait until early Spring-Spring and into Summer (unless you get into the 90s). I’d be cautious of the Fall since you can have the drying Santa Ana winds.

I had some in one gallon pots with big escape roots. When I cut them in the Fall, some didn’t make it into Spring. I think they didn’t have enough roots left in the compacted one gallon soil. There roots are very fine which probably lends to their finicky nature.

Good luck, Rosemary are very cool!

I recently (end of October) dug up and relocated a Rosemary that I will eventually train into a bonsai if it survives. I would have waited for March if I could have but it had to go! So we will see if it survives a fall removal.
I know that their roots are susceptible to frost so definitely move to ground or heal it in if you do it this late.

All of my experience is with container grown material. They don’t like having big roots cut off. Small feeder roots are fine to reduce. You’ll probably have better luck with the smaller/younger plants.

Get a large rootball when you dig it, and dont bare root it. Be careful during subsequent repots. Slowly work out the field soil from the outside a little each repot.

Thanks Everyone!

Thanks! I'll check it out!

I think I'm going to dig them up in February depending on the weather. It usually starts warming up then.
Jan or Feb would be ideal, put it in pure sifted pumice-available in SLO at Air Vol Block. Good luck!
Thanks Jeremiah! Will do!

Thanks Ryan! Definitely will do all I can to keep as much soil and roots.
