I was at my usual spot at the local nursery today and found this lonesome yew sitting by itself in the back of the yard. I got a great price on it but I'm looking for some more eyes on it.
The left branch was dead and wouldn't work into the final design so I lopped it off.
I'm thinking about styling it upright.
The trunk leans severely back and can be potted upright with looking unusual.
What do you think?

Nice looking tree with potential but the soil looks like crappy nursery soil. First get it into bonsai soil next spring and stabilized. Then develop the foliage some more and after 2-3 years then start thinking about doing some styling. Either that or chop it up now and plan a funeral. I collected mine 5 years ago in April 2019 and will finally be moving it into a ceramic pot next spring. If it takes that move without a hitch I will style it in 2026.

Interesting. Can’t see changing the angle to upright considering the way the trunk curves. But have an interesting option care of a tree at Michael Hagedorn’s…….

Think about this. The tree will be able to take this change and do fine as it’s pretty tough species. Will need a properly designed receptacle (almost think he used something like a brake drum welded to a base). and build up the trunk foliage on both sides…or no when growing out the tree and styling.

First will need to change the media, then cover the media with screening and build a stand to hold the tree securely in the new angle and grow out while designing a base. Would be a fun project.
