Who Did It Better? : Shimpaku Juniper Nursery Practice

A friend and I acquired a couple of $25 shimpaku nursery stock subjects this past spring and let them grow all season. Amidst the current PNW cold snap and cabin fever, decided to style them up.

We want to know : who did it better? #1 or #2?

Don't have before from both, but rest assured, they looked exactly the same.

#2 is electrical tape to protect trunk split

I think #2 has the better trunk wiring and #1 the better foliage layout.
For a first styling, I'd go for #2 because in the long run there's more options to explore compared to #1.

Where did you pick these up? It's fun to pick up small shimpaku to play with. I rarely find them though.

I’ve picked up a handful from @Eric Schrader on his site bonsaify.com … they have been vigorous and high quality. The one in my avatar is a cutting I got from him last winter (post stying obviously)

Realize this is last year but I vote for #2 if your still counting... I got two from Eric as well and they are doing great so far!

Number 1 think it's more my style. I tend to like natural shaped trees and only like bonsai that look like bonsai in the first branch is one third the hight ratios and laid out in a very uniform by the numbers way if it's done Extremely well.
