Possibly cryptomeria japonica Spiralis. Not familiar with its use for Bonsai. Used on the appearance of the foliage it would not be a recommendation from my point of view.I am also looking for any tips on care and future design ideas. I probably need to not buy trees without some sort of research...

Thanks, I think you are right about it being Spiralis. I really like the foliage but need to see what can be done with it.Possibly cryptomeria japonica Spiralis. Not familiar with its use for Bonsai. Used on the appearance of the foliage it would not be a recommendation from my point of view.
Best feature seems to be the twisty trunk and bark, also seems to have a reasonable root spread on the surface. Perhaps someone else has some ides beyond the quick observation.
Thanks, I like the tree! I just visited Michael's garden for his Spring Seasonal so this is perfect.I own a cryptomeria I bought as a little sapling in a nursery, though it's not a spiralis. It's a vilmoriniana.

The foliage is very much like yours, but very compact.
I've been successful in foliage control and pad creation using the methods described by Michael Hagedorn for needle junipers and cryptomeria in this entry of his crataegus blog: https://crataegus.com/2012/08/26/how-to-pinch-junipers/
This entry is also very helpful for anyone working with junipers.
Hope it helps....
Thanks for that site, will take a look and se what they say.If it helps, this site seems to care about the trees.

Buy Cryptomeria Japonica 'Elegans viridis' - Architectural Plants
It is a peculiarity of this evergreen tree that it retains its juvenile foliage.www.architecturalplants.com
There probly isn't very much info that you haven't read yet. I waited too long to be able to delete or change it, lol. There was a funny comment in it though...... "DO NOT POT THIS TREE".Thanks for that site, will take a look and se what they say.
I found a 14 footer at a sad plant sale. Bought it for real cheap. It made four air layers at the same time. Three went into a sort of a very odd forest. The base, with similar gorgeous twists similar to yours, made a very nice specimen tree. In my hands, the mature sections would not bud back. But, with patience, the foliage will just get longer and longer. Lots of fun!! Good luck with it.I am also looking for any tips on care and future design ideas. Yeah, I have been thinking about air layering just above the lowest branch and making this into 2 trees, except that I have yet to do a successful air layer.I found a 14 footer at a sad plant sale.
