What was the best bonsai/tree related advice you have been given?

From the late Charles ? (he had a nursery in Pigeon Forge TN for years)

You can have a picnic under a good bonsai...

Took me a while to really get the gist of this one:)

John

I have not heard this before- I get it and I enjoy it.

Keep them growing

Let the tree grow healthy, use the right technique at the right time.

how much water

when asked how much water does the tree need, the master replied, "Depends on how crispy you like your foliage"

Apparently one bonsai master said about when to water.... "Wait until it dies then water the day before".
Don't know who when or where. Just heard it :o

That's very similar to the way I was taught to wire: "wire the branch, and bend it to shape. Stop bending just before it cracks." Works great most of the time...

I asked Walter Pall at a workshop in April what advice he would give to a beginner. He said something to the effect of "Go and learn from many masters. Don't be afraid to listen to what they say or to forget what they say." I've paraphrased. It was a while ago and I didn't have a pencil.

On BSG, Chat section - I think Matsu Bonsai found out that on our side Lingnan [ Grow and Clip ] was mostly used, very little wiring.
He said I was lazy.

Had me laughing for days.:):):)

As one of those folk presently growing trees in marbles, from 3 mm to 15 mm with just compost as the organic, I would agree with, was it Kimura.
In fact a long term growing situation with only 3 mm glass marbles / beads is under way [ and compost ].
Good Day
Anthony

Anthony, was that you who posted the tree growing in 3mm glass marbles and compost on IBC?

I acknowledge it is possible, but ask why would you do it? Certainly you have better options available? The lack of irregular texture on the surface of the marbles makes for less surface area, less air exchange... Are you just proving a point? Are these glass beads something you have a lot of and a cheap/ easy medium for our to get? Just curious.. Not bashing you. I find it kind of funny as I know it is POSSIBLE to grow a tree in most any free draining mix, and always liked that quote about growing in marbles.. I just don't think anything short of lucky bamboo is normally grown in marbles! Lol

Always wondered how lucky the bamboo feels to be growing in marbles.
