What type of Root Pouch is best.

@Maiden69 Thanks for the clarification.

For me personally, in one year I’ve not had root growth significant enough that they would have needed ‘containment/pruning’ via the pouch. (Or, that the pouch would have helped initiate fibrous root growth).
But, the additional details are, I have a shorter growing season in MI, and my ‘grow bed’ has zero amendments.
If I recall correctly, you had a nice setup of a raised bed with good quality, good draining soil.

In my conditions, a root pouch would certainly help if I left a tree in the ground for multiple years.

Like everything on here, little details make all the difference.

And, while I wish I had your setup and weather, my consolation is I can grow Japanese Maples😉

They are constantly pruning the roots, not once a year when you "lift" the tree to prune the roots.

The more roots that escape, the faster the trunk will thicken. That's why I use the cheap generic ones that let roots through. If I want finer root development, I can just pick them up from time to time.

You must not be growing elms. I get inch-thick roots out the bottom of my generic growing bags after just one summer on the ground.

I’m jealous! On the other hand, I’m not sure my back could take that kind of growth!

I don’t really care for them, but I’m now understanding why some love shohin!
