To me there are several type of pictures for bonsai.
1. For show: best view, best angle, in proper settings or background set in some way.
2. For design: multiple angles with background set to not interfere with the view of the trees.
3. For memory aid/history, discussion with friends.

For me it's 99% number 3 for me to remember my progress with my trees or to talk with my friends here. Some day I will do 1 and 2. Having owned multiple photo stores in the 80's and 90's, while my knowledge may be a bit dated, I do know a thing or two about taking pictures. I just haven't had the needs yet.

Often in the middle of working a tree, I stop and take pictures. Bonsai is the primary reason why my phone get so dirty.

So what type of pictures do you take?

I’m the same - all No. 3. I don’t really have anything yet that really warrants better pics. Right now, the pics are really to track and share progress. I do, however, appreciate those that take the time to take more formal pics.

I do the 3 of them.
But anyway if you use your phone to shot pics, let me recommend you an app ( photoroom) that automaticly cleans any background when you make a pic (and lets you choose a solid one or none). I began to use it today, and it is very useful for us bonsaiers.
I took a pic of my whole garden and it cleaned the background this way:

Also a pic of my doggie

It works great to erase any background in the trees pics, and as long as I know it works for free in these resolutions....
