The fireworks I ordered for the 4th arrived early! Oh, wait, I hate fireworks, so I got some little cork bark elms instead and probably for less money. New toys for the holiday.

What does one do when you just got off work and it's 111F in Arizona? Well, you 100% remember a stand of the quite rare Olneya tesota (Desert Ironwood) in the median of a very busy street that has, for some strange reason, had a bumper crop of seed pods that you saw driving to the doctor a few days ago. You think to yourself, "I better go rescue those seeds." As I said, they are quite rare, and native stands are nearly gone as the wood has been aggressively harvested for carving and other uses. The heartwood is very dark and extremely dense, and actually does not float. They also have wonderful light purple flowers. It seems that they bear seed only a few years each decade. Anyway, enough from my nerdy self, here's the pics:

A carving (this is the natural color):

The bounty it's actually more than it looks like as its about 2 inches deep:

Today I did my first ever wiring on this Oak as I was worried I’d missed the thickness window to bend the base and was told it will likely thicken again come September so it seemed like now was my best chance. Ignore the mildew, Lancashire is humid and rainy most of the time plus the UK is strict on chemical plant things so idk how easy copper sulphate or whatever I would need is to get hold of. 😅

I’m both really happy with it and proud of myself but also anxious that it may not be that good (I now realise why a lot of beginners or mass produced trees are corkscrews and/or S shaped… its far too easy to do when you are thinking ‘I need to make sure it has movement in all directions’). I know a series of trunk chops is usually the way to build decidious trunks… but I was having such fun doing this I forgot about that. Trying not to dwell on it and worry myself over something as simple as a tiny tree. 🙂

Put up the second shade cloth and flooring in1751642183556.png. Really hot this year.

Then watched fireworks from the porch.

I should have titled this thread, What did you do yesterday as I always post in the am over coffee.

After realizing that books and videos are not sufficient alone for getting more proficient at bonsai techniques, I had decided to take in-person lessons at the Bonsai Seika Shop in Istanbul a few weeks ago Today was the third session and the topic of the training was wiring. I still feel awkward about that though. It looks like I need to practice a lot.

I also bought a wild olive from a nearby bonsai enthusiast today. I am not sure about the chop scar and the transition at the bottom which looks like a failed graft, but I guess it is still not bad for 87 USD

Finally, ended the day with a glass of red 😎.
