Just starting work on this new Schoodic pine from Conifer Kingdom. Today I started with the new branch bender on the too-straight up trunk and cut out a few branches. I'm aiming for the look of a gorgeous one in a private collection I saw a few months ago.

I had acquired this particular Sierra from Todd back in July of 2022. Although it was originally a Mirai tree, most of the styling was done by Todd himself while he was studying with Ryan before he finally purchased it to mark the start of his own garden.

Over time however, the tree continued to lose foliage on the furthest right side while gaining significant strength on the left and rear. The coarser foliage also made the relative stout height feel too small. I had decided earlier this year that the composition needed to be evolved and had a lengthy conversation with Todd regarding the direction I wanted to take. 2 months ago, we tackled the tree together and here’s the result.

Winter is coming… time to get ready. Don’t have too many trees that need protection but podocarpus, gardenia, azalea… felt last year out on benches was too cold for them.
Structure rather primitive but should do the job.

What soil are you using on those oaks? Straight perlite or a mix?
Hmmm, trying to remember. I believe it was primarily pumice and perlite with some succulent mix, it was basically what I had laying around. It’s a bit of a mess especially in the root maker containers because it falls out.

Repotted some acorns for the oak contest and prepped a bunch of seeds for cold strat over winter.
Thanks for the reminder. I was going to get my winter sowing setup started yesterday but I'm still pretty jet lagged.

I'm finally going through photos from Japan today

Since my carnivorous plants were a little overgrown with star moss from 16 days of no maintenance I practiced some mossing last night 🤣
Still have a few patches to fill in. The tail modification is hard to keep watered.
