Ultimately, I decided against the currently wired branch at the crest of the arch as the leader. From one angle it was pigeon-breasting toward the viewer, from another it arched away and toward the viewer, and still from another it ruined the remainder of the tree. It will be removed.

Raising the lower, longer, and previously background branch as the new leader is the optimal choice for this tree.

Now that all the structural work is complete for 2023, it will go dormant and continue development over the next several years with a repot-reposition in 2025 with an intervention to thicken the base and trunk (either slab or wide stone under soil).

@August44 came in from NE Oregon and stopped by for a visit after picking up his new car. Left me with a really nice Soldano pot! Thanks so much August!

Then worked on azaleas whips. Improving the bends from spring. Cleaning off old leaves. Actually one can bend whips during the winter if there is a protected area to put them in.

Also did two thread grafts to this Trident with my better half and a friend from our study group. Still have to wire back graft’s tip up.

Due to DAS natural branch growth pattern being upward, idea #1 is more manageable and maintainable with wire/guy wire. I’ve seen other spruce trunk apices bent downward and stay down, but I’m thinking it might not be realistic to expect DAS to hold that form (idea #2 above).

I’ve seen a ton of idea #1 achieved in a variety spruce, so I’ll likely stick with that form.

Not interested in what the base is like? Nice virts, but I find it odd that you'd have everything planned out without viewing whats below.

Some work on a Beech, early days

Raining today so no bonsai work
Your second post on this page without a pic, even though it says one is required in the title, is it really that hard??

It was raining today so no bonsai work, who cares? You could of brought something in to work on

A Beech, recently removed spent leaves to have a look at the structure.
This photo took about 10 seconds🙄

I know! But I realize now DAS won’t stay down and I’m okay waiting to decide on a front but keeping same form. I really wanted option 2

put all my bougies together, categorized by color, got on a ladder and took a pic. I'm a proud papa, all of them except the 2022 airlayer one in the back are from this year's spring. Thanks to all of the phenomenal input and knowledge in this community for helping me figure out how to improve my care/propagation/styling strategies.

Gonna do another big propagation-athon next year, but focusing on thicker cuttings only, and trying nebari enhancing techniques early on.
