Built a little planter box out of some discounted pressure treated wood I picked up from depot last time I was there. My first stop at depot is always the junk lumber pile to see what I can get for 70%-80% off. Always great deals to be had if you don't mind your wood with a little curve to it 😂

Also, being new to actual cold weather, I made the mistake of leaving my bag of potting soil outside. Now I've got a rock solid ice cube of potting soil and temps forecasted in the 20s-30s for the next 10 days. I'll have to bring it inside at some point to thaw it out enough to make it usable.

Technically this was yesterday, but could easily have been done today - I just wanted to get ahead of the Cold arriving. This buffalo juniper was a workshop project so she can't freeze (it's a she - has one lone berry on her and I'm oddly excited to finally have a female juniper, as the rest of my crew seem to be a frat house of pollen cones), so she's spending the winter at the bottom of my window well. Since it's an actual egress window from which one could egress if needed, ground level is only a few inches below the top of the tan plastic.

Historically I've just plopped a slab of plywood on top of the well during super-cold temperatures. Given this is going to be a bit Lasting, I ventured out to Lowes to get a proper piece of plexiglass, in course of which adventure I learnt just what the internal dimensions of my car AREN'T, but thankfully the thing was able to bend Just Enough.

The tried and true plywood slab got broken in half to cover the top of the window opening to minimize wind, and I think she'll be all right down there for the duration. Now if only the garage (where the rest of the outdoor trees are hunkering down) would stay reasonable...

Thread-grafted a korean hornbeam to fill in gap. Here is the tree--I had to do the work in the garage because it is sub-freezing outside today

Here is a close up of one of the grafts from the front

And the other one from the back

I have had good luck with these in the past so fingers crossed

Worked with Boon and two other students to set the tree up to swap out western foliage with shimpaku with approach grafts and scions. (The scions are mostly for practice and will be removed in the final tree.).

This was actually yesterday, but I think it applies to the spirit of this thread.

Better half and I had John Eads (@JEads) come up to do a grafting workshop. 2 days/13 folks in the workshops.

Great information. Lots of hands on practice.

Each of us ended up with 4 grafts on our two project JBP’s. Two junipers went back with John for foliage switch

Learned an awful lot!

I know where that cart came from 🤣. I like my carts in Lowe’s blue 😉

I took a picture of one of natures bonsai…. The lone southern yellow pine formal upright.

My significant other did me the favor of giving me her bad cold. It reared it's ugly head once we touched down in Barbados so I'm studying ficus trees, drinking rum, and floating in the ocean.

There are worse places to have a cold lol. I hear Drinking rum and floating are the best doctors orders.

I always wanted a prescription to convalesce by the sea. I hope Barbados is in-network.

Here is our party stopping at another bar on our 6 hour party bus tour
