What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

2 cu. feet of pumice for spring reporting.

Rocky Mt. BioAg had by far the best pricing on the Internet.

What's the particle size?

I see it:
Size: 3/8" - 1/4"

Why is it always listed large to small, never understood that.

I've been looking for a decent supply of 1/8-1/4, but most all sources are 1/4-3/8.

Did they had a sale? Because Build a Soil has better prices. Their 1 cuf is $16.50 vs $29.95 both need shipping added. To central Texas I paid around $38 for 1 cuf shipped. The 1 yd is $211 + freight, Vs $423 + freight. I don't see the savings.

Discs are also plastic.
Got tricked by the light on the edges nd assumed they were metal, nevermind about that then lol.

To get to that you might have more luck with colanders. There's people around here who also use disks in combination. To get them 90 cm tall they need to grow a ton, especially if you want a sizable trunk with that, so putting it in the ground also makes sense.

I wish I had the planting-in-ground option in my location, but I have planned purchasing Anderson Flats and additional containers suitable to various sizes.

How consistent is the particle size from build a soil?

Very consistent! This one will definitely not be good for shohin trees. It has very little particles below 1/4".

This is a pic of their pumice. The one mixed has 1:1:1 pumice - Monto Clay - Bonsai Block. Both substrate from Bonsai Jack are within 1/8"-3/8" with the majority of the particles in the 1/4" range.

Feel sorry for the mailman, 50kg of soil.View attachment 521037
I wish they had something similar in the US... but a little heavy for less than 1 cuF.

Damn! Build-a-Soil didn't come up in my search.

I'll look at them for my other components.
Thanks.

Soooo, I emailed them to ask for 1/8" - 1/4" pumice...

Normally not a fan of S curve Chinese elms… However saw that Wigert’s put up some new Chinese elms and this one peaked my interest with a 3”base and pretty decent taper. Price was a steal.

Last tree purchase for a while. I am weak

When I look at Build A Soil today, their price is $19.95 per 1/2 cu. ft. vs my price at Rocky Mountain @ $29.95 per 1 cu. ft.

The shipping was the bad part for my order @ $81.05 for the cheapest cost available to Virginia.

I will still investigate Build A Soil since they have a store 5 miles from me.

Nice material. I'd consider layering off the top and making the branch 3/4 of the way up the new leader. It will give you better taper and you'd have another potentially nice tree.

Was pretty pumped when I saw this. Haven’t had the chance to get my hands on a nice Chinese elm that isn’t googley eye expensive. Two bills for this one.

But yeah, I’ll make some decisions once I see it in person, but one of my first thoughts was two trees in one.

2 feet+ height
2.5”-3”+ trunk diameter

Wrapped in burlap and heeled in ground and had bark around it

Keeping it this way at home now (will update pics tomorrow) and hoping to pot into growing container in 2024 to continue development
