What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

Yesterday I visited a small mom and pop garden center and I found some small bonsai pots tucked away in a corner of a rack with old stuff.

When I asked the lady what the price was I got the feeling she was surprised I had found them.

Those look like bonsai pots she said, but I will give you a good price, what about €0,50 a piece.

I couldn't believe what she said and I didn't want to look greedy but I bought all of them.

There were 7 pots and there are some differences in color between them.

Pot size (LxWxH): 9.5x7.0x4.0 cm.

I just picked out and purchased this red leaf ficus from wigerts today. It’s not a very common ficus and it has larger leaves but I think this will make a very unique tree eventually, I see a natural banyan style in its future. Maybe it perched on a rock pile…For now the plan is to grow grow grow. 😁View attachment 444369
Even though it is a large leafed variety, it is one of my favorite ficus. The red of the new growth is stunning on this ficus. I will be doing a heavy chop on mine in a few days.

I love Wigert's. This is the first year that I haven't ordered anything from them.
Wish I could say the same but I bought one of Jerry's ficus and a large Escambron. Normally I get at least half a dozen plants from them but I have run out of indoors space. I did buy two pots from them as well.

Any info you can share on growth rate, habits, likes and dislikes would be greatly appreciated. Info on the ingens is few and far between. The red leaves and the fact that it is another species of strangler fig is what caught my eye. I’m also digging the fact that it’s an African species of ficus. It should fit right in next to my religiosa 😁 I’d love to see yours if you wouldn’t mind sharing with the class.

Soon to have an ACTUAL bonsai tool.

Shipped today.
Nothing fancy for my first go, but I don't imagine I'll need another pair any time soon.

Stone Lantern has a good selection of stuff discounted right now for anyone interested. Almost bought a couple different things that I don't know how to use yet, but then I'd be tempted to mutilate my trees just to play, so decided against it.

I'm getting one of these!

I got these these “leather shears” in the mail from Amazon today. I figured I would give them a try for bonsai. So far so good, they cut twigs cleanly.

I really need to slow down…. I’m running out of room. Lumber for a new bench needs to be my next purchase 😂

A local guy who was very involved in the bonsai community was downsizing and selling off most of his stuff. This is the first one of these sales I’ve been to.

Got 2 big tubs of premix bonsai soil, bag of shohin soil, 2 things of wire, and a bunch of mostly Japanese pots all for about $100. It’s sad to see someone who has to give up the hobby but cool to see all of the things they’ve loved go to people who value it and will continue to use it. I suppose that’s what bonsai is all about! 6E775E62-95E4-40A0-8E0B-8BCFE9C6E838.jpeg

Formally not purchase but done myself… my wife wanted a rack with ‘climbing’ roses… couple of weekends… there we go…
I concluded I might be better carpenter than painter but she likes it 😜
Roses behind the house… recovering after purchase and repotting… soon full set…

Canada day long weekend sale at the tree nursery 30 % off everything solved my Amur maple seeds not sprouting got 2 cultivar is called flame assume great fall colour have not dug under the soil but don’t see a graft wound . And 2 taxus. Cuspidata cultivar nova they look interesting upright cultivar but not a column form more of a vase shape all or in 4 gallon pots The taxus are going in the ground beside the porch . Give them 5 plus years see if there worth digging. The Amur’s most likely test growers for my ground growing system I’m working on
