Valley oak, Quercus lobata ROR

Some nice looking nebari! I want to a lobata or two to my very small collection (in in Bakersfield). How tolerant they are of pruning?

This one seems to respond really well to pruning. And the leaves are reducing well as it ramifies further.

I think this repot it will take a shallower pot. I have three options and would love opinions.

The first is a very shallow triangle, brownish green

Next is a nice, Sara Rayner pot, green oval

And a much wider, almost white oval

Thoughts?

The white oval is too big for the canopy of the tree. The green oval is a very safe choice. Anything will look good in a Rayner pot. The triangle pot could accentuate the directionality of the tree.

I really like the look of these Valley Oaks. I need to find one when I go up there in a couple weeks.

Where in the Fresno area are you looking?

Regular nurseries and tree farms in the area - usually straight with no interest but occasionally you can find one with an interesting base to cut back to. Also club members, but most aren't interested in selling their good stock. Although, generally anything is for sale at the right price.

I have a valley oak being delivered today from The Johnsteen Company. Will be my first oak tree. It is young enough I can add some interesting shape to it. Yours are great.
