The way I see this thread, we have a new guy who has not done even the few basics to express true desire to learn the art and ingratiate himself to the forum. IIRC, he's in/near my town and was looking for bonsai material the same week I was digging up dozens of trees and selling them at fire-sale prices. Invited him to our club meetings and Spring Show. Never heard from him again...until this.

So, when he shows up 6 months later and suggests we have too many forums, we get 3 pages about how we should be more welcoming to newbies. It's absurd, and a recipe for disaster for clubs and forums alike. Usually people get roasted around here when they're all type and no trees.

If LOG wants to learn, he's going to need to come out from under the bridge and take some initiative. If that happens, watch and see how he is welcomed. I'll be the first to offer help...again.

So your experience is that filling a club with newbies and welcoming them to teach is the way to go?

There has to be a middle ground...you need to accept and encourage new members while maintaining interest for the more experienced members. If you swing to far in one direction, you get no new members and the club dies a slow death. This is happening to a bunch of local art groups around here, one that I'm a member of (and at 53, I might be the youngest member) has been on a slow steady decline for about 10 years...membership now half what it was and most members 70+...and they're always lamenting the lack of new members. Go the other way, and more experienced members lose interest and stop participating, or break off into splinter groups.

In this case, it certainly does appear that the original poster has made little to no effort to get involved. He didn't take you up on that amazing offer (better than those ginsu knives), didn't update his location...that's completely on him. I'm all for helping people newer than myself, but I won't do all the work for them.
