TOO MANY FORUMS

I am amazed that so few newcomers take the initiative to use the search feature or review the Resources tab.

For all those new to Bonsai and/or this forum I would highly recommend doing searches on such key phrases as "pink thong" and "foemina" . After this basic homework, go ahead and post. @sorce will then be able to welcome you to Crazy and all your questions will be replied to.

But reading everything?
I read a lot of past posts here about trees and techniques I liked or needed to learn before I even made a single post here.
Now I read all of the flame wars of years gone by when I've read through all of the new posts here. They're easy to find. There is still useful information on bonsai in them. Or most.

Too many forums for us beginners on here. Need a search function to funnel through everything. JMHO
Even if this site didn't have a search function, which it does (even mobile), you can use google's "site:" operator to search any site.

It's actually often better than a given site's internal search functionality.

Whoa....didn't expect to get run over on here. Sorry guys. Sounds like an A, B forum. You know the rest. Sorry again.
Just checked, and the first two responses to your very first post on Bnut (Been Reading....) suggested that you add your location to your profile and check out the search function. Now, you post your second thread NINE MONTHS LATER and you appear to have still not done either of those things?! I am completely baffled.

It's very hard to change the location in your profile if you can't use forums :P All jokes aside, i would recommend just reading the "New to Bonsai" for while and after that search on subjects you want to know more about and/or browse a specific tree type/style, and if you have 'real questions' you could make a new threat. Or do the above, but i think you have more tips then u wanted.

Hey this guy is new here. We all know how long it takes to get "settled" in.... We all have our own way of feeling and navigating our way around here...each to their own.
The point is he is a newby and I don't think his intention is to blow up this place. How he (or any other new person here) goes about that is NONE of our business. He is merely trying to fit in and share in the bonsai knowledge here. Its our responsibility to welcome him, and guide him as best we can. The future development and success of this forum, is very much dependant on newbies (and new people), coming through to learn and share.
As it is.....there is over 8500 members here and I don't even see 1/10 of them posting. Perhaps if there was a more welcoming attitude from some of the senior members here, that number would increase to the benefit of all and mostly this forum.... I think a LOT of members are reluctant/apprehensive to post, because of the ridicule here from time to time (especially towards newbies).
In the end its a bonsai forum, and one would expect that harmonic atmosphere, that bonsai is suppose to teach us ?

Thank! You! I will absolutely use this. That way I can filter thorough the nonsense. I need basic questions answered specifically for certain reasons and I don't want to just look through a bunch of threads. Thanks all.

This is one reason why there are several classification sub forums I guess one might call them. To be able to go to a specific area for the tree your needing info on. It also helps specific topics from being lost in a mess of bonsai threads that are irrelevant to say...maples. it serves its purpose. No one expects a person to read all the threads not pertaining to what they are searching for. The search engine is a great tool. Even for just a refreshing ones mind on a topic that they want to make sure they recall correctly.

I wouldn't quite say new. He's been here for 9 months. As Colin mentioned, he still hasn't updated his profile so we have no idea where he's at so we can't give him the best advice tailored to his climate.

Yep agreed. He should update. I'm here for more than a year and still feel new......All i'm trying to say is....a newby should feel happy, welcome and comfortable from day one. A sapling here should be treated as we treat a tree sapling, or this forum might loose him/her. One never know when a Walter Pall in the making starts posting here. Newbies should be coached and guided.....We all are smaller than bonsai, and that should be our attitude in general !!!
That to me is the purpose of a bonsai forum....:)

I felt that way when I started here and since I saw a lot of 'welcome' to the newbies and it seems to me that any question asked in a new thread is answered really quickly and in a general very good way.

I think this is completely faulty logic! ( no offense Fredman) Why is that everyone always thinks you have to cater to the newbs when it is the existing membership that provides the learning content. Why are we not doing more to promote good content...instead of placating questions that have aready been asked and answered 100s of times.

This is exactly why many bonsai clubs fail...all the attention is placed on the newbies....the experienced folks lose interest and stop participating.... I can't begin to tell you how many really good bonsai folks have come and gone over the years from here...

I'm not saying we need to be rude to noobs but we need to be talking about bonsai things that will keep the interest of the experienced folks or this place will be nothing but noobs....look at all the other forums out there...and this place over the last several years....

Noobs often come here with the feeling that they are owed something...not always but frequently... Perhaps there needs to be some kind of process that all newbs go through to join...including completing your profile, reading a few guidelines, and a stupid test, before their account is approved...

The noobs will come no matter what you do...we need to be focusing on ways to keep the experienced folks active and involved....otherwise the writing is on the wall..........

Funny that, from my experience it is more that kind of attitude that contributes more to clubs or groups failing.
Maybe Bonsai is different but I doubt it.

No doubt the forum is big enough for you to ignore the noobs if you feel you are above them.

So your experience is that filling a club with newbies and welcoming them to teach is the way to go?

Where did anybody say in the last two posts anything about newbies teaching?

It's not hard to be welcoming to people is it?
Maybe for some of you it might be but like I said nobody is forcing anybody to do anything, if a club can't find a decent balance for newcomers and experienced members alike then it might be time to look at how the organisation is run and if it is not to ones liking then move on, start your own group and do something about it.
My experience is when you have a club, society, association or whatever that the biggest reason for these to fail is generally because there is a core group of members who often have been there since day dot, more worried about status and slapping each other on the back and then for one reason or another can't handle change, different people come in, new people, young people bleurgh... and if they take the stance that too much time is spent on newcomers they quickly turn inward looking and and will bleed members.

I mean there is one section of the forum here that is designed for newcomers out of 30 or 40 different sections, pretty easy to let it go and not contribute if it pleases one. It's a public forum, kind of what these things are designed for.
I just can't see how fredmans post can be called faulty logic.
