To argue, could you put your best foot forward to post?

But it does seem to have a calming effect....

Eh I have no beef with you. You work the trees, propagate, and sell some. All in the desert too. Basically you're engaged with the hobby.

Oh! Thank you for your blessing! It means so very much! The truth is you can beef away I could not care less. I don't have a great deal of respect for drive-by flamers. I have known many of these people for years. You don't even add up to one good thread. Nearly all the regulars that are here now are good people but there are a few trolls... eh guess I should not feed em...

Ryan and Darlene? Tree buyers who've spent time here, but have nothing to contribute for substance? Isn't that exactly what this thread is about? Sure, there are plenty of members that really know their shit. There's also plenty that don't.

Of course, I could be reading your post wrong, and you're not falling on the sword for her. If that's the case, then disregard the above aimed at you.

Not sure what's being said...but from the way it sounds...trolls are a foot. That said...

You got this Clyde...don't coddle the troll by giving him what he wants. No matter how provoking it seems. It's just words...individually they mean nothing. Remember that. No significance in troll gibberish.

Well here we are at 13 pages and all this arguing and nothing to show for it. All I wanted to see was a few beautiful trees built from nothing over a good period of years. Nothing, not one.

Lots of lip service and no proof......

I thought I shared my bougainvillea? But...true not over a good period of years. Maybe a few...it was a great thread Al. Sorry for all the rabbit holes. I know I sort of created one of them...

Well, you could show yours, I'm in the process of starting again with some bigger Vitex stumps and growing them the way you do Tridents. I think they will really respond well if I can keep my trees out of the dumpster for a few years this time... well no promises. It's touch and go at my house again... Everything I had that I could not sell went into the dumpster when we were homeless.

I don't post my work to brag, what for? No one cares. I think it matters though when the pissing match starts. If you want to question my expertise, show me where you come from. I will give you the respect based on what you show. If you want to show me the great tree you just bought for $1000.00....Yawn. If someone wants to come and regurgitate everything they read on the interwebs and are humble and bow out when the things go south, cool I have no beef. But if your want to argue with me about technique, you better have a good portfolio of work to show and how you got it from A to B. If I had the money I could buy trees....all day long. California is full of excellent cheap bonsai.

If that's your thing:rolleyes:

I care. If I know anything, (and that's a pretty big if) chances are I have learned it reading your progressions over the years. I see what you do with the kinds of things I can get and I think, hey... maybe I can do something like that. It has given me the guts to try things that I would have never tried before.

I can add one of my own trees. Can't hurt to post it up, really. I am in no competition with Smoke- he obviously out classes me in every way. However, this is one of my better efforts that is closer to the end goal than some of my other plants/trees.

Here's the details: Natal Plum, 3 years from the 5 gallon nursery container. When I found it, it was frost damaged and had leggy branches cascading out of the pot, and moving along the ground. Year 1 I wired the lower branches into position with some pruning. Year 2 I repotted into a 10" terracotta bulb pan with pie slices taken out of the rootball and backfilled with 1:1 lava and bark- with significant pruning once it showed active growth. Year 3 (this year), it's been repotted into a shallow plastic dish, with the roots partially rinsed clean and placed into a 2:2:1 mix of lava, growstone, and bark. Once it gets hot and the tree takes off, I will begin pruning again for shape and ramification.

I've since learned that Natal Plums can be repotted either in early fall or late spring in 9b, and that pruning back to the last leaf on any branch will reliably produce two shoots from that node during the growing season. They're slow to lignify, and wire needs to be left on for more than a year to set. The thorns hurt.

@Smoke ... Al,I don't have as many years in under my belt. But I did start this project in 2014. Decided to do its own thread so I can add to it at a later date. Still wet behind the ears from your knowledge. But I'm chugging along on my journey...enjoying the stages...looking back at how far I have came. And look forward to maturing and growing along with each step I take along my bonsai journey. I appreciate you and ones like you who have offered their valuable knowledge of lessons learned...so I feel I was able to forgo some harder learning hiccups by learning from the likes of what ones shared here. But, I've also had a few of my own along the way...but I learned valuable lessons along the way...so it wasn't for naught.

I absolutely love your documentation of progression...its inspiration for others to see your vision and grasp the fundamental concept of things. You are a low rider my friend...no high horse for you. Never took your progression threads as a bragging thread.
