Dude, that is an awesome trunk filled with tons of possibilities! With the right pot, a little wiring and some jin and shari work you'll have a tree people will be drooling over.

The first thing you need to do is nothing that you do not understand. Do you know if the base of the tree is one really gnarly trunk or is it a narrow trunk wrapped around and folded up to make this twisted mass at the base?

Good morning everyone. This is a tree I got this spring. I can take a newer photo when I get home. But, what do I do with this Black Pine? No branches until all that way up the trunk. I am obviously going to get rid of those jins, but the nursery has wire on them that is holding the tree in its current shape. I will be removing the wire and cutting the jins soon. Let me know what you guys think. Is grafting my only option?

We really need to see the tree in way that shows a better profile from all sides. Most of the time people will show four images straight on turning the tree a quarter turn each frame (if that makes sense). If you look at the photo @petegreg used for example, this would represent an excellent first image. You would then turn the tree a quarter turn for the second image and so forth and so on.

As for it's health, yeah it has really responded well. I got it from a local nursery and it looked really weak. Only those longest needles were on it. It was pushing pollen sacs too. A good sign for a healthy tree, not so much for what this guy looked like. It has back budded all across those 3 branches. I am hoping if I let the candles extend next year I can produce back budding along that trunk. I am not hopeful though. LOL. Hence my dilemma of what the heck to do with it.

I am really amazed at how sparse it was when I got it compared to how strong it seems to be now. I will try to post the photo from when I first got it along with the rest of the photos you guys requested this evening. I think you might be a bit surprised.

Lol. Thanks for that info. Much appreciated. Here are the photos. What the heck do i do with it? For reference to size id say the trunk is an inch to an inch and a half in diameter. I have a few ideas already but id rather not taint the water with them.

Wire it, shorten the branches by bending them, pull them down, let more light into the interior to spur some back budding... no design is the final design until the tree is dead!

Beebsy, I am not a pine guy. However, the third image (or somewhere close to it) would be my choice as a front to start working with. As @Eric Group stated, wire the branches. Put as much movement in them as you cam which will result in shorter branches.
