The Tree Thread

Damn tree doesn't fit in my new and fancy photo studio... it even makes the Shiner look small and unsatisfying! Though currently frozen solid, this palmatum will likely be the first tree I re-pot as a Michigander!

No, no dedicated thread for this one. I picked it up last spring and haven't done much to it. I missed the window to thin this past fall so it'll get pruned wired and re-potted all in the next 4 weeks, I think. I'm hoping to get it out of the mica pot and into a big a$$ Koyo cream glazed rectangle... I'd put it in an oval if I had one big enough.

This one will hopefully be back in a nice glazed pot as well

How are the root grafts doing on this one? I see a few grafting nails near the base.
My Sierra Juniper is finally settling in to its new climate. Will begin wiring and styling again this year!

I’ll tell you in a few weeks??😬
I performed three root grafts last spring.. I know that one has failed and by the looks of it, one probably has taken… And I have no idea about the third which is on the front of the tree.C6826DCF-E5C1-45F7-90FB-FDD0377B98F8.jpeg
My yaupon Holly who definitely wished I had sold it to someone who lived in Georgia.

I understand what the Holly is thinking. The Sierra juniper sulked for two years after I brought it from California, then it slowly began to strengthen, I repotted it last year so am hoping for a strong growth period this year.
Hokkaido Elm just below!

This juniper was really my first foray into doing bonsai properly. I took a class where I watched a professional shape it, then took a couple more for a few other trees where I did the wiring.

Last autumn I unwired it and essentially undid the work since it wasn’t mine. I still don’t really “get” junipers, I think, but I suspect I’ll be better served building on my own work than another’s.

pretty sure I want to focus on getting it to back bud and that it’ll change quite a bit as time goes on

I disliked that photo so much I went and tweaked the tree. I’ll leave it alone now. Still not great but at least you can see the deadwood now.

Shorten the tree, compact the branching over time and change the primary branching angles downward. then wire out flat for eventual pad formation. the tree has potential.

After having a question answered by Bjorn I went ahead and finished the hornbeam. There’s more work to do in terms of cutting back, such as a thick branch you can see in the upper left that I cut back a bit and am debating leaving for now. Fixed the branch sticking up in the upper right, too.

Hey BAUN! There is something unsettling about the design direction this tree is going. For such a dynamic trunk it feels forced into this upright symmetrical, almost broom style form. Are you open to styling suggestions? Do you have another thread on this tree?

Shimpaku. Really only it’s first winter. Looking forward to air layering off the trunks covered in The clothe behind the three main trunks.

I am but I’ve not started a thread for it yet. I literally just don’t seem to have the knack for juniper at all yet.

I’ll have to start one at some point.

here’s a little quince I got from Kusa Farms - Shannon styled it

Well, I love your dedication to the art in such a short period of time, and I’d love to give you some design ideas on that guy. I’m going to do a few sketches for thoughts I’ve got and I’ll message you.

would love that! Here’s a black pine I dud up today, I feel like at least I’m more in the ballpark with pines. Maybe not, but it’s a start! I feel like the apex is really where things get hardest on these!

I was right to sell the Suthin shohin, I wasn’t ready for it.

Raised it about an inch during today’s repot and it made a huge difference. As someone just told me she’s got a small waist, pretty face and a big bank!

Awesome tree! Really like the valley background in your pics! I live in the mountains too, but my view is not as nice as yours!
I bring a tree to work weekly and display it in my lobby, here is a pic a customers chinese elm I am growing out at the moment.
