The Tree Thread

Ilex serrata from airlayer. I have to hide it away from the birds or else they will strip it clean. The berries were so thick at first that the inner berries all rotted, so this is actually half the original berries.

Great work on maintaining wildness in this tree Nao. Overall lots of lovely elements to this photo. Tree, backdrop, accent, lighting. Great work.

Aleppo pine I finished wiring today. The bark has begun flaking over the last few years, the landscape trees I've seen have furrowed bark so perhaps that will develop some day. Before/after.

This winter I'll graft some scions at the apex to bring it down, after they take I'll probably eliminate all the mature needles on the tree.

Another cloudy week in Oregon for my vine maple on lava rock. This is how they grow in Central Oregon, as a clump, but it's really difficult to collect maples off the lava flows, so I simulated it here with seedlings. This was put together 3 years ago.

The plan is to fill the lower cavity with lace fern and sedum, which grow with the maple. The current accent plant is too large and will be replaced with something else. The grape-leaved lace-lip fern (Myriopteris gracillima)
has some of the smallest leaves of any fern in Oregon

Scott Elser has the best vine maple on rock clump anywhere and I was inspired to do one after seeing his. It was featured prominently in the first PBE.

Scott's amazing vine maple clump is something like 20+ years old and he tells me he has only repot it once or twice. Daisaku has repeatedly said that it could go in the Kokufu.

Great composition, Nao. I've loved Vine Maple since I was in college in Humboldt County. It is a lovely sight in the under story of a northwest forest. I love the leaves and sinuous lines of the trunks. I think it's underused and under-explored as bonsai. Apparently it's internodes tend to be long, but you'd think it could be used as larger trees.

I'm looking forward to seeing this develop over the coming years.

I just posted photo tax so I just wanted to jump in here to take advantage of it and say that this is fucking fantastic

Prunus mume. Being working on this one for some time. Compacting the once very leggy branching has been quite a challenge but getting there. The left lower branches still need to be brought closer. But with approach grafting (which I find very easy with mume) it will be possible.

Approach graft done this past year.

Large arakawa maple under construction. Two more thread grafts added today.

@MACH5 You already won arakawa, you've been cut off from more arakawa.

I got this trident from Bill Valvanis' garden in 2021. Shoved it in my duffle and carried it on. I just committed to redoing all the branches to be pine tree like.

Serg, that arakawa reminds me of one I’ve seen in a Japanese picture book. I’ll have to look for it. Great bones, it’s going to be fantastic.
Stewartia, Shuho pot for photo tax.

Thanks Bri! Yes please do send if you can find that pic. The stewartia looking really nice! Mine took a hit during a hot spell last year. It sort of bounced back but I'll have to see how it comes out in the spring.

This is from BT #5, but I’m not 100% sure it’s the one I’m thinking of. Yours has a better base and taper, but both are very natural looking.

Thanks Bri! Yes even it's not the tree you had in mind you can definitely see the similarities. Because it has come up in the past many times, I will add that that arakawa is about as ramified as you will see. They are coarser than many other cultivars. The ones that appear more ramified that's because the tree has more primary branches. So when looking at the tree from the front the overlapping effect creates the "dense" ramification. But branch for branch that's pretty much what you'll get typically.

Shohin zelkova. Got a good clipping back last fall to promote more back budding. As it grows out again, the intent is to make the silhouette softer looking and not quite as tight.
