Defoliated and wired arakawa rough bark maple - I have no good backdrop to highlight detail so used a folding table 🙃 I know you typically aren’t supposed to do this to Japanese maples, but after seeing Bjorn from @eiseienbonsai perform it on one of about this age caused me to give it a shot. It needed work to bring it to shape and address some issues. Will try to remember to share when it’s fully leafed out…. All branches are sprouting. There are some wire bite marks at the apex from the prior owner, but I’m pretty sure as it barks up it won’t be a problem.

my acer rubrum. I haven't done anything to it but a partial defoliation (after I burned the leaves, oops!) and spreading some of the apex with a prop for light. Lots of long branches that I can't wait to cut back, but I really like the placement of the main branches, especially the little one on the left that descends.

As promised. The gamble paid off IMO. More to do, but not bad for this year!
