The reason

Basically Japanese culture.
On my third trip to Japan, a Japanese photographer friend took me to a flowering bonsai show in early Spring, in Nagahama.
After the tenth tree, I was absolutely sure that I wanted to do something like that.
This one below just blew my mind.

Always loved plants and gardening and bonsai was always really cool looking and amazing. Asked for a catalog bonsai as a gift and as I walked with it to death trying to figure out what went wrong (thanks to all y’all) I became fascinated with it !

30 here. We're a bunch of youngsters.

Same here too with the attenborough and irwin @JoeR and that snake wrangler from the US that was always shouting on discovery channel and natgeo. I forgot his name. Brownish hair.
Nice one. I remember watching a lot of Jacques Cousteau and Irwin.

I think the world would benefit from more leaf observing like you
Todays leaf observations told me that one of my tougher trees was partially in too much sun. It’s been very hot and intense sunlit afternoons lately and I noticed some very small “help me” leaves in the canopy. So I dragged him to a spot where the sun is more dappled and vowed to fix the sun trap issues in the old spot soon.
I’m sure if it could feel relief it did. I know I did once I got out of the melting sun where it had been sat.

Which species do you have that cannot take german fall sun?
I’ve noticed some of the maples are the most sensitive. I have an area outdoors that can become a serious heat trap on hot days...even I can’t sit in that spot for long and I love the sunshine. The one moved was an Emerald Dream, normally thats one of the sun happy ones but I guess even he needed a break 😂😂.

I don’t like the weather at the moment, it’s so cold in the morning compared to the latter half of the day.

Sorry for you. I love it!
But.. Rains are about to start, and bring cold days too. Is that better ?
🤣

I’m happy to sit outside when we get the 38-39c heatwaves earlier in the summer...just not in THAT particular spot, badly designed area just seems to block any breeze and just focus the suns rays directly there bouncing off all angles to the same spot. It’s good on less sunny days for its shelter from the wind. I just hadn’t realized it had been cookin there again 😂😂

I like days that are consistently cool or days that are consistently warm. I don’t like this “dress for the wrong weather for half a day” period of the seasons.

It's been like that the last few days here too. Need a jacket in the morning and shorts by noon. I'd prefer to skip the jacket weather, although I know it's coming.

I was Hot AF the other morning, went in and changed to summer clothes, came out to a hidden sun, and I was cold AF!

I heard about miniature trees in Japan while driving in a teacher's car, in the middle of Africa, on a Grade 7 fieldtrip. Was fascinated and classmate lent me her grandmother's bonsai book that I still have to this day. Moved to Taiwan, saw them er'where and said, "Hey now!"

I wanted to have a mango tree, so I sprouted a few seeds and got the seedlings going, everyone told me it would be impossible to grow a mango in my climate and that it would die after a couple months. I knew that in order for it to survive it would have to be outside during the growing season and indoors during winter, so it would definitely be in a pot, so I started reading about trees in pots, and one thing led to another.
Three years later the mango seedlings are doing just fine, but I gave them all away since I had to relocate.

A neighbour when I was a kid gave me 2 bonsais an apple and a pair. She told me to keep them somewhere airy and warm. I found out 2 weeks later that an airing cupboard was not what she meant. 😂😂😂 I left bonsai alone for 35 years. Now I find it to be a relaxing and worthwhile hobby.

31 also! Always loved growing things but usually they were edible. One year I very randomly bought a potted EWP at Lowes and it blew my mind the first time I watched snow fall on it. My garden was mostly brown except for the Kale and all my tropical fruits were indoors. I started dipping my toes in that spring, (about 22 years old) but never got serious til a handful of years ago. Mostly being unbelievably broke kept me playing with seeds and collecting seedlings in the early years. versus buying real prebonsai stock. I wasted some time but, it was what it was
