The Celtis (Hackberry) Scored Progression Contest

Naturally growing seedlings are not allowed. I think the intent behind growing from collected or purchased seed, or starting from a softwood cutting, is the element of testing our propagation ability.

If you wanted to collect the seeds after the birds have eaten them and deposited them but before they have germinated, I think we can allow that, as you are essentially just allowing the birds to remove the fruit and engage in the scarification process. It would be like collecting a black walnut seed after a squirrel removed the outer fleshy part of the fruit. I personally prefer mail order. Lol.

Finally, a week late, but the seeds arrived today from both sources.
Celtis australis, European Hackberry or Nettle Tree
Celtis ooccidentalis, Common Hackberry
These two came from Sheffield's.

Celtis laevigata, Texas Sugarberry
Prunus virginiana, Chokecherry, a bonus from TreeSeedMan.

I'm not endorsing either of these suppliers, but both shipped promptly. It isn't their fault that my postage and taxes support a postal service that can't get things done right.

Eeeeeey! I ordered from treeseedman too! I got Korean elm as a bonus!

Question: I'm looking at Celtis tetrandra which is native to my place. All local seed sellers sell packs of 1 kg seeds, which is definitely overkill. Is it allowed to get a nursery plant and then take a one year old cutting out of it?

I think I have some celtis seeds in the pocket of a raincoat somewhere.

I'll take cuttings as a backup.

I’m not partaking but wanted to share this Celtis Sinensis that I drive past a few times a week on the way to work. This was last winter, I remembered I had a naked photo of it somewhere but only managed to find it again this morning in my archived Instagram stories
