The amazing art of MJ Lai (Mrs. Tokutake)

Hopefully this is ok @Sansokuu

BonsaiQ just posted a video on YT about painted pots... a personal view of the work done for those that have never seen it before. I played with ceramics in my teens, mostly prefab containers that the store made and I helped paint before firing. My favorite and the only one I bought was a 60's bug with huge rear wheels...

This is an insightful video! I could learn a thing or two. 😂 Only difference is I made the pots and will be painting them for this batch heading to Nationals. The banter between them is so fun. Japan has a huge number of bonsai potters compared to the U.S. so their pricing tends to be a bit more competitive. I paint my pots mostly right side up though. For lighter washes you can use an eraser to remove ‘mistakes’. Thicker lines I use a blade to scrape off. If anyone has questions on any of the processes involved in making or painting pots feel free to ask. :)

On the video there are a few pots that she flips around, I don't know Japanese so I rely on the CC... but I think she place them as it would be easier for her to paint. The walls on that mokko (I think that's what it is) pot have a steep curve and definitely easier to paint like that.

Yes, that definitely makes sense. It is hard enough drawing on a flat surface let alone painting on 3-dimensional forms. 😂 I use a banding wheel to help raise the height, and an eraser as a prop (she uses a towel wrapped around a bar).

Dinosaurs!

A little late to the suggestion party, but I will buy any and all Sansokuu dino-themed pots 💕

On a serious note, North American themes like cardinals and badgers would be bomb diggity

Glad this came back up... I want one of these!

Nao claimed that one and it is somewhere in the yard, but I have another similar one. I'll put it on my to do list to paint. This is loosely based on a Pacific tree frog - I say loosely because they are very tiny frogs in which case the lady bug should be three times the size depicted. 😂

Ohh dinosaur would be fun. The closest I have are chickens and roosters. 😂

Please let me know when it is ready!!!

Itty bitty pots for Nationals (just two weeks and some change away!!) If anyone wonders why I make so many tiny pots, is they are a really good ‘warm up’ to bigger pots because the smaller ones are actually a lot harder to paint on and control, so once I get a couple done, the paint brushes usually behave how I would like on the bigger pots. I can only really paint about 4 things max a session before my hands give out.… or my toddler comes in like a wrecking ball. Can’t do much when she is turning my chair, grabbing brushes, moving pots and other unbridled chaos. 😂IMG_8112.jpeg

I‘ve been feeling really uninspired lately and in a bit of a funk, painting has felt like a slog this week 😩 How about suggest some really whacky things to paint? Maybe that might get me inspired again if I can get some really ‘stupid’ ideas out of my system. I have already started drawing magicarps and doge memes. Yes that might mean opossums. I always tell myself sometimes bonsai is too serious, so I need some completely opposite of elegant bonsai motifs. 😂
