Still new to bonsai but here's the stuff I have collected this yearView attachment 514063View attachment 514064View attachment 514065View attachment 514066
Not sure what this tree is, thought it was a beech at first but now I'm not sure. The trunk isnt too big but has a lot of character.View attachment 514074
little Mountain laurel, hadnt tried one out, was an easy collect so grabbed it, there are thousands of large ones behind my house, most have crazy trunk formations. (Attaching a photo of one from behind the house)

Good luck with the mountain laurel; I have tried at least a dozen times with zero success.

Sooo I just got back from a stroll in the woods, found something to do in the future... check out this beech tree... in Kentucky, most of the area where this tree is the dirt doesn't run deep, and if it does the tap roots tend to change directions when it finds the clay and goes parallel.20231022_180512.jpg

Also, not sure what I can do with sourwood, but check out this weirdo, I couldn't not dig this up...talk about junp starting your nebari lol. Got 90 percent if the root system and soil with it I'd guess, no straight down tap root like most in my area20231022_210524.jpg

Chopped down a 5 gallon bucket and did a little wiring, no clue if the leaves on it will reduce, guess we shall find out in a few years if it survives.

We drove to a friend's farm near Annapolis MD yesterday and walked and dug trees for hours: 4 beaches, 2 hornbeam singles, 2 hornbeam clumps..

HOLY 🤬!
I totally gave up on it until just now when I'm trying to bed down my trees before a snow storm hits tonight, and discovered roots growing out the bottom of the pot, then noticed THIS!

I know it's a slim chance, but any tips to help it through winter?

Looking like a scrub oak, like I originally supposed.

I would overwinter it in an unheated garage.

I don't have one.
I might be able to bring it up by the house on the covered back porch, maybe even get it some bottom heat. Out of direct sun and less exposed, but not any warmer or much less extreme temperature swings. Might be able to cobble together a cold frame of some sort.

Looking for any information on yamadori in Oregon. Any information would be greatly appreciated in terms of obtaining a permit and general areas which might be good for collecting.

@August44 might be able to help out there. He's made quite a few tree hunting trips in the eastern Cascades.
