The 2023 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

Very gangster juni .blessing up for this one. Turface and organic in form of bumper crop-(compost w/ manure, casings, composted bark n some sort of shellfish casings and other goodness-use this as my organic component for everything love it) roughly 5050 a little more 60/40 (organic/inorganic) toward the top underneath the top dressing

Only went so organic forward feeling for a juni because the soil it was in was pretty black as you can see in root mass..drilled tons of holes in pot

Also had half bag of bonsai mix I forget particulars but added it about mid layer just to be chopsticks through along with random lava handfuls

No follow up shot yet I was pressed for time unexpectedly and had to put it on ground in a frame with compost piled on it crudely I hope it’s ok for a real potting

I just discovered my beech from few yrs ago collection doesn’t seem to be alive even after developing nice branching and setting up nice for this year… I thought I got through the hurdle of “is my beech actually alive”
It was just a trunk and a few buds when I first brought it home..I think it grew a lil past emergency chute
growth…

I think it lived and it died over this past winter maybe I don’t know what or when it happened it seemed to be doing great (all this explanation for a tree not shown lol)

What makes you say that?
Scratch tests aren’t looking good, and it’s last season growth is all brown , like the branching, and not very pliable … I was out collecting the beech in the picture above and noticed against the other trees how the equivalent in growth should still be pliant it seemed? Also they are all starting to wake up- I know being in the pot could delay that but still doesn’t look like the buds are elongating or even hinting at opening

@Cajunrider all that reading of u moving to arctic temp and turns out ur coming to Philly area? I’m in nj about 20 min from the city- it def is cold in winter but more temperate than New England above us def not the arctic lol

Yeah. They’re just weenies. Zone 7 is ideal. It gets cold enough to enjoy the occasional snowfall without getting so cold as to risk frostbite from the wind. It’s also the same zone as much of Japan, so all the classic Japanese bonsai species grow well here.

I am in Phila right now and have been in the area multiple times in all seasons. Yes it is colder than Louisiana but not like Quebec or Ontario where I used to work.

It’s beautiful here now, I don’t know if you’re the kind of guy to go all out of your way to try and get collection permits but in New Jersey at least it’s virtually impossible to get a hold of anyone who has the slightest idea what you’re talking about - I even did the research and quoted the “statute “(or whatever)number and everything so they didn’t have to do any thinking lol so I would just take what you want but then again I’m just a gangster like that

That’s gonna ruin it for the rest of us. If there’s a law on the books that allows for collection, then there’s a way to do it legally. I can certainly believe the bureaucrats in the permitting office have no idea what you’re talking about, and that makes it difficult, but the fact that few people understand what you’re doing is all the more reason to ensure you represent bonsai practitioners as a community of responsible stewards of natural resources. We don’t need bad PR.

I used to think the same way. No one will even miss it. Who cares if I pull up a stunted sapling and take it home? I’ve changed my mind. I invite you to do the same.

I can appreciate and respect where you are coming from but I’m pulling from woods that are thrashed with dirt bike trails they literally cut trees down at leisure simply to make a new trail and no one is busting their balls and to add a layer to it they are risking their life in the process and yet still it is hardly frowned upon and is significantly more hazardous to personal well being as well as the environment. It’s not like I’m taking trees out in the open I’m like the only person that “sees” why I’m doing anyway, oh did I mention they chainsaw down whatever the fuxk the want

I will leave the bad PR to be stoked By the idiot taking from where you should not

Maybe it’s from years working construction(and literally tree removal services) but I can spot a site tagged to be demo’d from miles away- these are also things I hit

I realized I came off a bit harsh, and then I went back to soften my tone, but you had already replied.

To reiterate my edits to my prior comment, I used to think the same way. It’s very easy to rationalize taking one or two stunted saplings from a big forest. But overall, it’s not that hard to legally acquire good material, and the potential harm to the community isn’t worth it. I invite you to change your mind as I did.

Truthfully I’ve tried and it was so difficult that it became off putting- I’d like to speak to someone in NJ and see how they went about it and I would go for it again considering I really tried before as it was

And no sweat the tone I’m kind of harsh as it is

God I hate this kind of shit. I don't care if no one sees what you're doing, or that it isn't risking your life, or that you think that since other people are idiots so YOU can be an idiot as well. I don't care that you think you know better than others because you know how to recognize land that is set for development because you worked construction.

All that doesn't change the fact that you're taking stuff that doesn't belong to you on land you don't own. You're making life more difficult for honest collectors. Actions like yours have closed collecting in some areas, soured landowners and land managers on collection. It's why restrictions on such activities in the East exist...

Won't change any minds, but worth a shot. I just can't stand the whining about how hard it is to do the right thing...as if doing the right thing depends on it being REALLY easy.

I didn’t say anything about thinking I knew better than others? It took a weird turn there but in all you are correct and I shouldn’t of said anything about it nor should I be so arrogant to assess situations and think I am the omega decider. I also minimized the whining portion to a shoulder shrug and continue my life I’m hardly on a soapbox

Little mulberry at work. It grew on the very lawn edge by the curb and It's been mowed down for years. It's about 13×4 inches in legnth and width but only a couple inches high. This would be a view from the top as it grew...

I actually love this, continually mowed and lopped mulberry are cool as hell and the species is so hearty I need another one, I had a big trunk cut with no movement that I dug out at my dads property and it shot out an entire canopy and just needed to be profile pruned and it got so dense! Ended up with a mini canopy type deal off one side a little lower than the chop and the other side had one going vertical from right at the cut basically… anyway I’m just saying it barely had roots and took off like wildfire… of course I left it there and he forgot to water it for weeks lol dead as door nail but I now wanna keep my eye geared for some thanks for the reminder.. there is a cluster I know of I’ll have to go reap
