The 2021-2024 bonsai time capsule

I’ve got one left. I sold the other two. Will update with a pic!

From post #4
The juniper's top keeps wanting to go adult foliage, which I think is too large/leggy for such a small tree. Been trying to fight it back with trimming.
The chinese elm forest got a new smaller pot and a little re-arrange which I think better suits it.

Well, the Ilex serrata died early last year in the cold snap. I’m not sure where the maple is, I’ll have to check and see if it made the move.

However, the Japanese Red Pine is becoming nice, and will get wired out this fall. I candle-cut it for the first time this summer and it is filling out. Lots of movement in the trunk, which will need to be somewhat reflected in the branches. The ‘21 shot and a couple from today:

16 years from seed.

I can never predict this trees behavior. I’ve tried over wintering in the garage and outside on the ground. I always lose branches. I’m going to chop back hard next spring and see what I get. May be on the chopping block in the coming years. Probably needs a more hot and arris environment that doesn’t get as cold.

Here’s my alder. In these 3 years I’ve managed to get it into a shallow bonsai pot and also start work on the primary branching.

Doesn’t look like much at the moment, all bushy and grown out:

Nice start to a base and nebari, maybe I’ll do some root grafts in the coming years:

Here’s a leafless pic from last winter:

In the future I’ll be looking to compact the canopy and build more ramification!

I accidentally disqualified myself from the time capsule. Looking for the two apples I originally posted, and remembered that I snuck into the time capsule, pulled them out, and planted them in a forest group.
Oops. 😬 🤣IMG_2404.jpeg

Update on my original post (#14)

Ginko clump: 3 trunks still alive, no sign of fusion really, and it's getting boxed up and sent to a seller who bought some of my ginko culls tomorrow.

Ezo Spruce: put it in a silly pot this year, and it seemed to suffer. Could also just be the Tokyo heat, but the lowest branch died off. Might add character, but not sure.

Sekka Hinoki air layer: this tree has been repotted twice since separation, and has started growing pretty well the last few years. Currently 5 trunks that all share a base. This picture is after I cut back the strong shoots.
