Tell me why native silver maple sucks?

You go for it!

In the search for developing a decent Silver Maple with good ramification, is the Ebihara method being considered?

The tree is definitely ready for this treatment, which would reflect positively in one’s efforts to build ramification.

I have one I’m working on. I’ll take pictures when I get home. They have awesome bark and very strong trees. I haven’t tried leaf reduction at all yet but the normal sized leaves aren’t that big actually on my tree.. too big for smaller size bonsai but even without leaf reduction I can see them making really good material for larger bonsai.

Definitely!! I'll probably do some root grafting next spring if I can find some sapling around town that's suitable for it. . I'm not sure if a box will be built this spring but if I start root grafting then a box would be much better then a bonsai pot so the roots can be sorted correctly. I'll probably find some seedling this year and keep them small just for the purpose of grafting roots then do all my grafts the following spring. Keeping the donor trees small is going to somewhat difficult seeing how fast they grow but it can be done.

So I repotted the small silver maple with a different rock because to be honest it kinda sucked. The way the roots went across the rock and then down into the soil was not very pleasing to the eye. I like the new rock and angle the roots flow into the soil much better now. I also took a couple of pictures of my oldest silver maple with the longest time in training but just can't make that "s" curve work aesthetically with whatever I try to fix it. I wired out a fare amount of branches on my largest silver maple and I think it's set up good for this growing season. I also already found some of those black spots on one of my trident maples that effected, all my maples last year, so i'm being pretty vigilant.Spraying with mancozeb fungicide. Just a little update..20250324_205143.jpg20250324_210137.jpg20250324_210212.jpg20250324_220648.jpg

Man I thought that was a ruff bark Japanese maple at first glance. I'm almost sure that's a shantung maple /Acer Truncatum which is not a silver maple the bark is all wrong and the leaves look too skinny but some silver maples do have skinny leaves tho🤔
