I hear you. I know it's not mame, but it's something also of interest. I was just hoping to grow a JM bonsai into a similar size even if its decades.

Yea I mean I figured getting a thick trunk takes time no matter how you do it and ground growing is just the best method. It's not like they really have the option available to them anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I really don't. I wish that I did, so I guess I'm learning how to adapt to this now. I thought I had patience but it's certainly cultivating. The particular plant type I believe is Acer Palmatum.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Acer palmatum cultivars often with very different hirticltural and bonsai characteristics.

i believe that was grown as a clump style or kabudachi. Where you take multiple seedlings and wire them together at the base then they fuse together as they grow. Giving it multiple trunks. That what it looks like to me, maybe I’m wrong. I just started one recently. Here’s a picture for reference. It’s pretty fun, you can get 15 Japanese maple seedlings for about $45 on a website called Japanesemaples.net. I did that and used 8 for the clump style and the rest for a forest planting. Check it out and good luck with your tree!
