Stewartia Pseudocamellia

Thank you Eugene. If the weather ever straightens out, I'd be happy to have you drop by! Hope you can protect yours well over the weekend.
Yeah, it barely hit 52F here yesterday and was 45F this AM.... brrrrrrr..... I can only imagine how cold it is in Ohio. They don't call S. pseudocamellia a 4 season tree for nothin'... those blooms will be spectacular! Looking forward to the pictures:).

Going to get down in the lower 30's overnight here over the weekend. It may snow I've heard tonight!

I'm itching to get my hands on one of @Owen Reich S. Monadelpha....:D

Here she is with flowers in her hair. These seem to open one at a time, instead of all at once, so this is about as many as I'll see together. Flowers are very pretty with the subtle green throat and yellow stamens.

This tree does make me happy, I'll be happier in a few years when that smaller trunk gets bigger. It's got a nice symmetry between trunks going at least.

They certainly are wonderful trees, but I think they only work in larger versions. Between the fall color, spring flowers, and colorful skin, there is really no reason that they are so scarce in bonsai. Time to start getting them better known here in the US.

Really nice Judy, too bad we don't see more of these in the US.

I bought some seedlings from Bill V years ago, and planted one in the ground. It's about 8' tall, with only about a 2" caliper trunk, but it flowered all over for the first time this year. Not sure if I will dig it up for bonsai or not, but in the meantime, I'm really enjoying the tree as a landscape tree. I also have two group plantings I'm growing out after reading the forest book from Saburo Kato.

Daughter trunk looking much better at that angle. Don't let it get away from you though - right now you need to increase the ramification and foliage mass on the main trunk by about 50% to balance the daughter trunk as it is.

I love this species. Wish I had one :)

As far as fancy bark goes, you need to pick up a few crepe myrtles :)

They are supposedly finicky and tough to get to grow in a pot, but I have not had many issues with this one. So if you do just take your time reducing it. Is your seedling a Pseudocamellia or Monadelpha? I'd also love to see your group plantings.

LOL I have one crepe myrtle, it's got nice bark, but has never bloomed! I sold off my other one, the flowers were pretty, but could never keep them inside the canopy.

As far as the main trunk canopy, I'm looking to go pretty tall with it. Stay tuned, it's getting ready to bust out with a ton of new buds, it usually grows hard after I cut the fruits off.

They will only bloom on new (young) growth, so if you want blooms you have to let the spring growth run until they bloom in the summer, and then cut back. Easier said than done :)

Believe it or not, I've let it run in past years and no flowers! But I'm in it for the trunk on that one anyway.
