Just wondering....I have a couple of maple trees and they are budding actually approaching extended budding, Chinese Elms, almost nothing in terms of buds. Do the Elms generally bud later? Thanks.
I have a bunch of different Chinese elm cultivars, and it all depends. For example my Hokkaido Chinese elms, which tend to be weak dwarfs, are already fully budding out. My cork bark Chinese elms are some of the first trees in my garden to bud. So I would say they tend to be on the early side... but it depends. It also depends on whether you have them in a warm location in full sun (earlier) or a cool location in shade (later).
Chinese elms are generally the earliest to produce leaves down here but, as mentioned, it can vary from variety and even individual trees. Mine bud up over a period of weeks rather than all at the same time.
Local conditions and any previous pruning or repotting can change how they shoot in spring.
I don't think I'd be worried yet unless I could see some other symptoms or knew there was some issue affecting the trees. In any case it is unlikely there is anything you can do about it at this stage.
