Did you know....

If you click on the location in someone's profile, a Google maps window opens up and will show that location?

If you highlight text in someone's post, a pop-up will allow you to post a reply to that text?

If you want to get a member's attention, simply type "@" in front of their name in a post... and they will get a notification that someone mentioned them. For example.... @Bonsai Nut ....

If you click this link you will see all the threads that no one has yet responded to?

Other tricks that people enjoy?

If you (new members) use the search function they could find lots of info before they ask the same question over and over again.

I know we talked about this feature a while ago, but can you add the script to also "quote"? Below is a screenshot of another forum that I go to that use the same version we are using.

The biggest difference is that when you reply, it will take you down to the reply window. So if you are reading a thread with multiple new posts you kinda lose track of where you were. When you quote, you can quote as many posts as you need, from different pages and even different threads, and reply to all of the quotes in one message.

And new people almost always neglect the archives, as do many long time members.
The map thing is awesome. I wasn't aware of that.

This forum is, by far, the best I've ever been a part of. There are so many cool tricks that no other site has.

The only issue I have is that the search function isn't very helpful to me. Maybe I'm using it wrong.

I seem to be only able to search for one word at a time. Also, there is a minimum character limit, so you can't search for "oak" for example.

I know there's a wealth of information on here, but I find it difficult to get to. I usually can get better results using google to find specific information on this site.

Am I missing something regarding the search functionality?

Search works well for very general topics but not for detailed ones.

This isn't a Bonsai Nut feature so much, but if DuckDuckGo and Google can limit search results to a specific website if you use "site:bonsainut.com" in the query. Then you can combine those search engine features with Bonsai Nut's content

Trying to find out how well snowbell species will air layer?
Code:
site:bonsainut.com "layer" styrax OR snowbell

Looking for preferred soil mixes for hinoki?
Code:
site:bonsainut.com "hinoki" soil OR akadama

To turn off watching every thread you ever interact with you need to change the default preferences by clicking your name in the top right corner and clicking "Preferences"

You can manually watch or unwatch any thread through the button on the top right.

I have noticed that as well. when I search Something sometimes it finds it (topic searched) but not all the time but if I start doing a new post I see more of those “potential threads” show up that didn’t when I searched first. Hope that makes sense

I’d like a feature where we can delete threads of which the tree is now deceased and which never gained much traction anyway

Since I complained earlier about the search, I'll also mention a couple things I really love.

The tools for adding photos, links, videos, emojis, quoting, etc. are really great. It makes it so easy to make nicely formatted comments.

I also really love bookmarking and setting up my notification preferences so I can follow threads long term.

From the perspective of a programmer, this site is fantastic in almost every way.

Nah... because while the thread may have not gained "traction" it may have some information that would be valuable to another member. Even if the tree died, there are parts of the journey that will help someone. I have several trees that died this year, I wouldn't delete the threads as it may help someone along the road if they have the same situation.

Make sure when you phrase your searches you use quotes around any words you want to be searched for as a unit. For example:

If you enter
blue star
in the search box, it will give you all results that contain either the word "blue" or the word "star". However if you enter
"blue star"
in the search box (in quotations) it will only show results that contain the words "blue" and "star" together.

Thank you for the tips, Mr. Nut!
